The Vitality of Sorokdo Blooms Through Art… South Jeolla Province Hosts Haerok Art Society’s ‘Beautiful Journey’ Exhibition

Special Exhibition at Eastern Government Complex Gallery Until the 29th… Displaying Over 40 Western Paintings by 15 Artists with Hansen’s Disease – Conveying Messages of Healing and Coexistence Through Themes of ‘Landscape’ and ‘Life’

(Muan·Suncheon = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province announced that it held the opening ceremony for the ‘26th Beautiful Journey’ exhibition, a special exhibition by the Haerok Art Society themed around the landscapes and life of Sorokdo, at the Eastern Government Complex Gallery on the 6th.

Fifteen artists from the Haerok Art Society participated in this exhibition, showcasing over 40 Western paintings that capture the life and nature of Sorokdo and the narratives of hope embedded within them. The exhibition was planned in two sections tailored to the spatial characteristics of the Eastern Government Complex Gallery.

The gallery on the first floor features the theme of ‘Landscapes of Sorokdo,’ capturing the peaceful daily life and nature of the island to convey the meaning of healing and rest. The gallery on the second floor, under the theme "Life of Sorokdo," illuminates the dignity of life and the value of coexistence through scenes depicting the harmony between the sea, deer, and residents.

The Haerok Art Society, which organized the exhibition, is a community formed in 2016 by Hansen's disease patients residing on Sorokdo Island to communicate with the world through art. Starting with five initial members, the society currently consists of 15 artists led by President Kim Yong-ha, who are capturing the unique stories of Sorokdo on canvas under the sponsorship of the National Sorokdo Hospital and the Nampo Art Museum.

In his congratulatory remarks, Joo Soon-sun, Head of the Eastern Jeollanam-do Regional Headquarters, stated, "The artists of the Haerok Art Society have boldly overcome the invisible walls of physical limitations and social prejudice with a burning passion for art," adding, "I hope this exhibition serves as an opportunity to inspire deep resonance and courage in the residents of the province." He added, “Moving forward, Jeollanam-do will strengthen support measures to create an environment where artists can devote themselves solely to creative activities, and will spare no meticulous administrative support to ensure that marginalized artists are not overlooked.”

Meanwhile, the ‘26th Beautiful Companionship Exhibition’ will be held until May 29 at the Jeollanam-do Eastern Regional Headquarters Gallery, located on Maean-ro, Haeryong-myeon, Suncheon-si. Admission is free, and anyone can freely view the exhibition from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.
