Busan to Host 44th Korea Theater Festival After 16 Years, Opening July 1

The Korea Theater Festival, the nation's largest theatrical event, is returning to its birthplace, Busan, for the first time in 16 years.

The City of Busan announced that it will co-host the 44th Korea Theater Festival alongside the National Theater Association of Korea from July 1 to 26. The 26-day festival will take place across major venues in Busan, including the Busan Cinema Center, Busan Citizen's Hall, and Geumjeong Cultural Center. Originally launched in Busan in 1983 under the name "National Regional Theater Festival," this landmark event has served as a cornerstone of Korean theatrical history, driving the growth and exchange of regional theater.

The opening ceremony will be held on July 1 at 8:00 PM at the Roof Theater of the Busan Cinema Center. The festival will kick off with an original musical titled 'Je (祭)-eo, Je (於,祭) and Today', which condenses the rich history of Korean theater onto a single stage. The performance will dramatically trace the journey of Korean theater from the introduction of Shinpa (melodrama) during the Japanese colonial period to the present day, symbolically connecting the past, present, and future of the art form.

This year's festival promises a richer and more multi-dimensional experience than ever before, featuring intense main competitions among representative theater companies from 16 provinces and cities nationwide. A key highlight is the "International Directors Exhibition," a program showcasing collaborative works between international directors and local Busan theater companies, which aims to expand the global reach of regional theater and elevate Busan as an international city of performing arts. Additionally, the festival will feature a "Networking Festival" for young theater professionals and various interactive events for the general public.

To raise awareness and encourage public participation, actor Yu Jae-myung, a Busan native, will serve as the promotional ambassador, while actor Go In-beom takes on the role of promotional committee chair. Tickets for the performances can be reserved via "Waddama Ticket," and detailed schedules are available on the festival's official website.
