South Jeolla Province Selects 3 Additional Eco-friendly Aquaculture Projects in Open Call… Secures Total Project Budget of 16.1 Billion Won
Boseong, Wando, and Jindo Selected in Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries’ 2nd Open Call for ‘2026 Eco-friendly Aquaculture Promotion Project’ - Laying the Foundation for Climate Change Response and Sustainable Fisheries through AI Smart Aquaculture, Seaweed Seed Facilities, etc.
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province announced that it has achieved a significant success with the additional selection of three projects in Boseong, Wando, and Jindo in the ‘2nd Recruitment of Subsidized Project Operators for the 2026 Eco-friendly Aquaculture Promotion Project,’ organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
The Eco-friendly Aquaculture Promotion Project is a program implemented to revitalize aquaculture through support for advanced eco-friendly aquaculture facilities, ensure a stable supply of seafood, increase fishermen's income, and ultimately establish a foundation for a sustainable aquaculture industry. This second open call was conducted targeting private businesses wishing to introduce advanced eco-friendly aquaculture systems.
A total of three additional projects have been designated in the Jeonnam region this time. Specifically, they include: ▲ construction of a new inland recirculating filtration eel farm in Boseong; ▲ land-based smart demonstration and standardization of barracuda based on advanced AI for climate change response in Wando; and ▲ establishment of smart seaweed seed production and land-based seedling facilities for climate change response in Jindo.
The total project cost for the second round of selected projects amounts to 12.5 billion won. By city and county, 5.4 billion won is scheduled to be invested in Jindo-gun, 5 billion won in Wando-gun, and 2.1 billion won in Boseong-gun.
Previously, in the first open call held last March, Jeonnam Province secured 1.825 billion won in state funding (total project cost of 3.65 billion won) after two projects were selected: the improvement of the pretreatment process for the recirculating filtration eel farm in Naju and the construction of an eco-friendly recirculating filtration eel farm in Jangheung. With the addition of the results from the second round of applications, Jeollanam-do’s 2026 Eco-friendly Aquaculture Promotion Project has been significantly expanded to include a total of five cities and counties (Naju, Jangheung, Boseong, Wando, and Jindo) with a total project budget of 16.15 billion won.
Looking at the project details for each city and county, Boseong-gun first plans to establish an eel farm utilizing a "recirculating filtration aquaculture system" that reuses aquaculture water. Through this, the county intends to establish an eco-friendly water quality management system and further enhance the production stability and environmental performance of inland aquaculture farms.
In response to climate change, Wando-gun is embarking on the demonstration and standardization of smart land-based aquaculture for high-value species such as barracuda. The plan is to establish a stable production system by incorporating AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology to implement water quality monitoring, environmental control, and automated rearing management.
Jindo-gun is focusing on the production of smart seaweed seeds and the expansion of land-based seedling facilities. It is expected to serve as an opportunity to enhance the stability of the seaweed industry, which is facing difficulties due to recent changes in ocean conditions, and to firmly solidify the supply base for high-quality seaweed seeds.
