South Jeolla Province Launches New Hospital Ship ‘Jeonnam 512’, a ‘Floating General Hospital’ for Island Residents
14.2 Billion Won Investment, 190-Ton Class, Equipped with State-of-the-Art Medical Equipment - Planned to Provide Medical Services to Approximately 5,000 Residents in 90 Islands Across 6 Cities and Counties
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has launched the new hospital ship ‘Jeonnam 512’ for the first time, which is set to dramatically improve access to public medical care for residents in island areas.
South Jeolla Province announced that it held a launching ceremony for the new hospital ship ‘Jeonnam 512’ at Samwon Heavy Industries in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, on the 24th. The ceremony aims to strengthen medical accessibility for island residents. A launching ceremony is a ritual in which a ship built on land is set ashore for the first time to pray for safe navigation and safety. Approximately 40 key officials attended the event, including Jeong Gwang-seon, Director General of the Health and Welfare Bureau of Jeollanam-do; Han Chang-beom, CEO of Samwon Heavy Industries; Cho Seong-ok, Head of the Gunsan Branch of the Korea Maritime Safety and Security Agency; and Yoo Chun-seok, Head of KR Engineering. The ceremony proceeded in the order of a progress report on the construction project, commemorative speeches, congratulatory remarks, and the official launching ceremony.
The "Jeonnam 512," unveiled for the first time, is a 190-ton class hospital ship with a total project cost of 14.2 billion won. The vessel is equipped with examination rooms, a pharmacy, and a radiology room to enable precise medical care, and is equipped with a large number of modern medical devices, including state-of-the-art digital X-ray machines and bone density scanners.
Once the Jeonnam 512 officially begins service, it will provide customized public medical services to approximately 5,000 island residents living on 90 islands across six cities and counties throughout Jeollanam-do, including Mokpo, Haenam, Muan, Yeonggwang, Jindo, and Sinan. It is expected to serve as a reliable "health guardian" for residents of remote islands with weak medical infrastructure.
Currently, the construction progress of the Jeonnam 512 is approximately 90%. Following outfitting work to refine the interior and final inspections such as sea trials, the vessel is scheduled to be delivered to South Jeolla Province at the end of this coming August, after which it will begin full-scale operations.
An official from South Jeolla Province stated, "The introduction of the new hospital ship will enable us to provide more rapid and systematic medical services to island residents," adding, "We will do our utmost to complete the remaining construction process without any setbacks and ensure the delivery of a safe and perfect vessel."
