Jeonnam Office of Education Expands Learning Villages Inside the Classroom with ‘Humanities on the Road’

Elementary Teacher-Centered ‘Dulle-gil Humanities Research Group’ Shares 3 Years of Achievements in Reading, Exploration, and Writing - ‘Namparang-gil Reading and Humanities Walk Training’ Held in Gangjin and Jangheung… Expectations for Spreading Field-Tailored Curriculum

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Activities by the ‘Reading and Humanities Education Research Group,’ which operates humanities trail explorations centered on teachers affiliated with the Jeollanam-do Office of Education, are gaining significant popularity and spreading in the educational field.

The Jeonnam Office of Education announced that it held the ‘Namparang-gil Reading and Humanities Walk Training’ for two days from May 29 to 30 along the Tamjin River in Gangjin and Jangheung. During this time, teachers belonging to the ‘Dulle-gil Humanities Research Group’ shared the results of the humanities trail explorations they had researched and developed over the past three years. Held under the theme "Reading Books, Walking the Region, and Writing My Life," this training session was organized to share the achievements and best practices of curriculum-linked exploration programs by teachers in the field who have been practicing reading and humanities education. Approximately 20 elementary school teachers from the Jeonnam region attended the session to engage in in-depth exploration of programs they themselves developed and operated.

The Jeonnam Office of Education has been striving to operate a reading and humanities curriculum utilizing diverse human and material resources in the region, such as by developing regional "Reading and Humanities Ecological Maps." As part of this effort, the office has actively supported teachers' "Humanities Trail Exploration."

In particular, the "Dulle-gil Humanities Research Group," composed primarily of elementary school teachers, has been conducting practical research since 2023 by developing a "Reading-Exploration-Writing" project that involves walking along local trails (Seohaerang-gil, Namparang-gil, and the Yeongsan River Waterway), thereby extending learning within the classroom into the village and daily life. The research group has conducted research on themes such as ▲History, Art, and Ecology of the Seohaerang-gil (2023) ▲Perseverance, Courage, and Wisdom Encountered on the Namparang-gil (2024) ▲Stories Blooming Along the Yeongsan River (2025).

On the first day of the training, activities included understanding the design of Humanities Trail programs based on planning materials accumulated by the group, presentations on mock lesson cases centered on student-led inquiry questions, and a conversation with author Kim Hae-deung, who is practicing village-based creative activities.

On the second day, participants visited local historical and cultural sites, such as the Gangjin Goryeo Celadon Museum, the Jangheung Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Hall, and Seokdaedeul, engaging in experiential activities enhanced with an inquiry perspective and commentary. During this process, participating teachers directly practiced writing activities that could be immediately applied to the educational field. In particular, the inquiry-centered lesson model linked to three humanities values—perseverance, courage, and wisdom—and the teacher-led lesson content development process attracted significant interest from the attendees.

Based on this, the Jeonnam Office of Education conducted the ‘Stories Bloom Along the Yeongsan River’ training in Naju in October 2025, and is accelerating the dissemination of achievements by releasing research materials on region-based humanities trails again this year. The Office of Education expects that this training will significantly contribute to strengthening teachers’ humanities capabilities, designing a region-centered curriculum, establishing practical links between instruction, field trips, and assessments, and revitalizing educational networks.
