Okcheon County Urges Adherence to 4 Key Guidelines for Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses… Strengthening Safety Net Until the End of Summer

In line with the issuance of nationwide heatwave advisories and severe heatwave warnings, Okcheon County has significantly strengthened its emergency response system to minimize health damage to its residents.

The Okcheon County Public Health Center announced that it is implementing comprehensive measures to intensively protect vulnerable health groups, including the elderly living alone, those with chronic diseases, the mobility impaired, and the housing-vulnerable, in response to the continuous sweltering heat, including the Korea Meteorological Administration's severe heatwave warnings. These measures aim to prevent heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion caused by the heatwave, and to preemptively block the risk of worsening cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Accordingly, the Public Health Center is continuing daily telephone checks and health consultations, focusing on those registered for home health care services. In particular, it is operating a tight safety net by immediately visiting the homes of those who cannot be reached to personally verify their safety. In addition, efforts are being intensified to promote heatwave prevention guidelines through village broadcasts, text message notifications, and on-site education, in cooperation with local community networks such as senior centers, welfare centers, town and township administrative welfare centers, and village heads.

Furthermore, Okcheon County urged residents to adhere to key guidelines for preventing heat-related illnesses. Emphasis was placed on practicing four major safety rules: drinking water frequently even if one does not feel thirsty; wearing cool clothing and utilizing parasols and hats; refraining from outdoor work or exercise during the hottest hours of the day and resting in cool places; and frequently checking weather advisories and heat-related illness forecasts.

The Director of the Okcheon County Public Health Center, who oversees on-site response, emphasized that while heatwaves are dangerous for everyone, they are a serious disaster that can be life-threatening, especially for the elderly and those with chronic diseases. He urged residents to refrain from outdoor activities during the midday heat as much as possible, and to immediately move to a cool place to rest and seek medical attention if abnormal symptoms such as dizziness or severe fatigue appear.

Okcheon County plans to protect the health and safety of its residents by continuously monitoring the response situation until the summer heatwave completely ends, while further strengthening protection activities for vulnerable groups based on a public-private cooperation system.
