Yangsan City Completes Construction of Demonstration Infrastructure for ‘Eco-friendly Ship Hybrid Propulsion’

Completion scheduled for the end of this month… To begin full-scale operations in September as a complex hub combining testing, certification, and corporate support

Yangsan City has completed the construction of demonstration infrastructure to respond to the trend of transitioning to eco-friendly ships and is moving to secure a base for the transformation of the region's industrial structure.

The city announced on the 27th that it plans to complete the ‘Eco-friendly Ship Hybrid Propulsion Land Demonstration Center,’ currently under construction within the Gasan General Industrial Complex in Dong-myeon, by the end of this month. Following equipment installation and trial runs, the center will begin formal operations this coming September.

This project is the ‘Land Demonstration Infrastructure Construction Project for Medium- and Large-sized Ship Hybrid Propulsion Systems,’ selected through a public competition by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy in 2022. A total of 34.3 billion won (9.3 billion won in state funds, 1.5 billion won in provincial funds, and 23.5 billion won in city funds) was invested. The facility will be constructed on a 7,377.2㎡ site with a total floor area of 2,968.45㎡, and its key feature is the inclusion of testing, evaluation, and demonstration equipment related to marine hybrid propulsion systems.

Beyond being a simple research facility, the center will serve as a testbed that integrates performance verification, certification, and corporate support. In particular, given that system-level verification is essential due to the nature of hybrid propulsion technology—which combines internal combustion engines with electric power—the center is designed to simultaneously support the localization of related equipment and the foundation for commercialization.

Operations will be managed by the Korea Marine Equipment Research Institute (KOMERI). KOMERI plans to initially deploy a team of 17 personnel across three teams in May and proceed with equipment installation and commissioning in stages. Subsequently, the plan is to expand the scope of support from a focus on testing, evaluation, and certification functions to include the execution of national research projects, technical consulting, company identification, and networking. With the International Maritime Organization (IMO) tightening environmental regulations and increasing demands for reducing ship emissions, hybrid propulsion technology—which can simultaneously ensure fuel efficiency and environmental sustainability—is considered a key sector for the next generation. Yangsan City places significance on the fact that the establishment of this demonstration center has laid the foundation for a virtuous cycle of technology development in this field within the region.

The city plans to use the center as a hub to drive the diffusion of technology across related industries, including not only shipbuilding and marine equipment but also machinery, electrical and electronic equipment, and materials. The creation of an environment where companies can pursue technology verification and commercialization within the region without relying on external testing facilities is expected to strengthen industrial competitiveness.

A Yangsan City official stated, "The demonstration center will become an industrial hub encompassing the testing, evaluation, and certification of eco-friendly ship propulsion systems," adding, "We believe that once research and development and corporate support begin in earnest, it will play a substantial role in increasing the added value of local industries and facilitating the transition to future industries."
