Attended the ‘2026 Commemoration Ceremony for Japanese Military ‘Comfort Women’ Victims’… Emphasized Noble Courage and Solidarity. “I will uphold historical justice by inheriting the spirit of the historical testimony of the late Grandmother Kim Hak-sun.”
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Song Hyeong-gon, Chairman of the Jeonnam Gwangju Metropolitan Council (Democratic Party of Korea, Goheung 1), has once again emphasized the solemn duty of the local council to restore the dignity and honor of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ victims and to pass on the noble values of peace and human rights they left behind to future generations. Chairman Song Hyung-gon attended the "2026 Commemoration Ceremony for Japanese Military 'Comfort Women' Victims," held on the 13th at Jeonil Building 245 in Dong-gu, Gwangju. There, he conveyed his deep condolences and expressed his determination to engage in active legislative activities at the parliamentary level to uncover historical truth and restore the honor of the victims.
The ceremony, jointly hosted and organized by the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City and the Gwangju Commemoration Day Promotion Committee, was held under the theme "From Courageous Testimony to Steps of Peace and Solidarity." Approximately 300 people attended the event, including Chairman Song Hyung-gon, Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Mayor Min Hyung-bae, Provincial Superintendent of Education Kim Dae-jung, members of the Integrated Special City Council, representatives from local civil society and women's organizations, and ordinary citizens. They shared the historical pain and strengthened peaceful solidarity.
In his commemorative address, Chairman Song deeply highlighted the decisive action of the late Grandmother Kim Hak-soon, which changed the course of history 35 years ago. Chairman Song stated, “On August 14, 1991, the courageous public testimony of the late Grandmother Kim Hak-soon, who broke through the wall of fear that had stood in her way for so long and stepped before the world, finally threw open the door to the cruel truth that had been closed in silence.” He assessed, “Grandmother’s great courage transcended a mere personal confession and became the starting point for a firm and solid international solidarity to restore the dignity and honor of ‘comfort women’ victims around the world.”
He continued, “A powerful force capable of changing the world emerges only when the memory of history is sublimated into civic solidarity,” and expressed his strong determination, saying, “The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Metropolitan Council will deeply engrave that noble courage and will of solidarity in our hearts and take the lead in establishing true historical justice and rectifying distorted history.”
In particular, Chairman Song also presented future-oriented values for the local community to pursue, based on the historical spirit of integrity and human rights shared by Jeonnam and Gwangju.
He stated, “The great civic spirit of Jeonnam and Gwangju lies in listening to the faint voices of the oppressed, standing always with suffering neighbors, and leading change toward a better world.” He pledged, “Based on this civic spirit, I will build an inclusive and just society where human rights and peace become part of daily life.”
He further emphasized, “Resolving the deep-seated grievances of the victims and upholding truth and dignity is an imperative task entrusted to us by the times,” adding, “I will remain faithful to the legislative calling assigned to the Assembly until the very end.”
Meanwhile, August 14th is a national commemorative day designated under a national law (the Act on the Protection, Support, and Commemorative Projects for Victims of Japanese Military ‘Comfort Women’ under Japanese Colonial Rule) to raise awareness of the Japanese military ‘comfort women’ issue both domestically and internationally and to honor the spirits of the victims. Established to commemorate August 14, 1991, the day the late Grandmother Kim Hak-soon first publicly testified about the suffering of Japanese military "comfort women," the event is celebrated annually across the country with a variety of memorial and commemorative activities.
The Seoul Metropolitan Council plans to continue its multifaceted legislative and policy support efforts, including the enactment and amendment of ordinances, to support commemorative projects for "comfort women" victims within its jurisdiction and to promote history education.
