[Break News Gyeonggi South = Reporter Lee Hyun-jun, Icheon] Kim Kyung-hee, the People Power Party's candidate for Mayor of Icheon, along with city and provincial council candidates, visited Gwango Traditional Market at 11:00 AM on the 25th to participate in a shopping event and announce pledges to revitalize the local commercial district.

The event was organized to widely publicize the 50 "Happiness Shopping Carts" introduced to Gwango Traditional Market at the end of last year and to encourage the use of the traditional market. Candidate Kim and the city and provincial council candidates personally used the Happy Shopping Carts to tour various parts of the market, purchasing goods and listening to the difficulties and suggestions of the merchants.

The Happy Shopping Cart is a community-oriented convenience facility designed to help citizens move heavy items more conveniently after shopping. It is expected to help enhance the shopping convenience for the elderly and families visiting the traditional market.

Following the event, Candidate Kim Kyung-hee stated, “Traditional markets and alley commercial districts are not merely commercial spaces, but the roots of the living economy where the lives and affection of Icheon citizens thrive,” adding, “I will become a market that lights up dormant shops and fills the alleys with laughter.”

As key pledges to revitalize the local economy, Candidate Kim presented the following: ▲ annual issuance of 30 billion won in local currency ▲ operation of free pop-up stores in vacant commercial spaces ▲ expansion of support funds for joint marketing by alley shops ▲ establishment of a permanent busking stage ▲ strengthening of the functions of the Commercial District Revitalization Center ▲ improvement of parking conditions around Gwan-go Traditional Market.

In particular, Candidate Kim revealed plans to purchase old buildings around Gwan-go Market to create a parking space with 250 to 300 spaces, emphasizing, “For traditional markets to come back to life, citizens must be able to visit comfortably. Solving the parking problem is a core task for the revitalization of Gwan-go Market.”

Upon the announcement of Candidate Kim’s pledge to build a parking lot, market merchants expressed their anticipation, stating, “There were many instances where customers wanted to visit the market but turned away due to the inconvenience of parking,” and urged him to “please make this pledge a reality.”

Previously, Icheon City opened the Commercial District Revitalization Center on February 20, laying the groundwork for the recovery of local commercial districts and support for the alley economy. Furthermore, from April 3 to December, the city is running the "Jackpot! Super Jackpot '26 Icheon City Economic Revitalization Festa 10+10'" event, featuring increased incentives for Icheon City local currency top-ups, payment cashback, and express delivery payments.

Based on this foundation, Candidate Kim plans to expand customized support tailored to the specific characteristics of each commercial district and foster traditional markets and alley commercial areas into hubs of the local economy where tourism, culture, and consumption harmonize. Candidate Kim Kyung-hee stated, “The Icheon economy will only revive when the daily sales of small business owners return,” adding, “I will combine policies on local currency, parking, marketing, cultural performances, and the utilization of vacant commercial spaces to create a profitable commercial district that citizens visit and merchants can smile.”
