Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Corporation and Andong Hahoe Village Preservation Society Sign MOU to Revitalize Regional Tourism… Establishing a ‘History and Culture Tourism Belt’ Connecting Gyeongju and Andong
The Gyeongbuk Culture & Tourism Corporation (President Kim Nam-il) and the Andong Hahoe Village Preservation Society (Chairman Ryu Yeol-ha) signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the Revitalization of Regional Tourism’ at Rakgojae in Andong Hahoe Village on the 21st.
This agreement was established to boost the overall tourism competitiveness of the Gyeongbuk region by linking ‘Gyeongju,’ which embraces the thousand-year history of Silla, and ‘Andong,’ which carries on the legacy of Joseon Confucian culture, into a single tourism zone. In particular, Rakgojae, where the signing ceremony was held, is a significant venue where the Korea-Japan Summit Dinner took place last May; the event was further enhanced by the simultaneous unveiling of a commemorative plaque for the ‘Korea-Japan Summit Dinner Venue.’
Through this agreement, the two organizations will launch a multifaceted win-win cooperation model that goes beyond a simple business partnership. Key areas of cooperation include joint promotion and marketing for the development of tourism in Gyeongbuk, the identification of cooperative projects to attract new tourists, and the sharing of infrastructure to revitalize the local economy.
Specific benefits are also being prepared to encourage actual stay-type tourism. The Corporation has agreed with Andong City to implement a policy of mutual discounts on admission fees between Gyeongju Expo Grand Park and Andong Hahoe Village. Through this, the plan is to reduce the burden of travel for visitors, increase their time at tourist sites and local spending, and thereby encourage the revitalization of local commercial districts.
In addition, a "public-private-public cooperation network" linking public institutions (Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation), local governments (Gyeongbuk Province, Andong City, and Gyeongju City), and the private sector (Andong Hahoe Village Preservation Society) will be firmly established to launch new tourism products. Furthermore, the Corporation will actively work to attract global tourists by linking with events such as the commemoration of the first anniversary of the Korea-Japan Summit in May of next year. Kim Nam-il, President of the Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation, stated, “We will organically connect Gyeongju and Andong, the representative cultural heritage sites that Gyeongbuk is proud of, to create an environment where tourists stay longer,” adding, “We will do our best to ensure that the synergy created by the historical and cultural resources of the two regions leads to the vitality of the entire regional economy.”
