The Embassy of Germany in Korea hosted the traditional spring festival "
Tanz im Mai
" (Dance in May) at the Ambassador's residence in Seongbuk District, central Seoul, on Thursday evening.
"As far as I have been told, it is the first time [...] that we built this Maypole here and introduced this part of German tradition to the Korean and international guests," Ambassador Georg Schmidt said in his welcoming remarks. "It’s very much a festival around a sense of togetherness and love [...] where villages traditionally steal the tree from each other for a ransom of beer [...] and young men install little trees to impress the ladies they fancy."
The garden reception featured recyclable tableware alongside a diverse culinary spread, ranging from traditional German fare to döner kebab to reflect the multicultural identity of modern Germany. The evening concluded with food, DJing and dance.
