Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on May 6 that it has completed patient enrollment for the global Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT05389215) of ‘Bersiporocin (DWN12088)’, a candidate substance for a fibrosis treatment, for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF).
The trial is currently being conducted in Korea and the United States. Moving forward, based on the global Phase 2 trial results expected in the first quarter of 2027, Daewoong Pharmaceutical plans to focus on global partnerships and licensing-out. In the mid-to-long term, the company also intends to expand its fibrosis treatment portfolio through the expansion of various formulations and indications.
Meanwhile, Bersiporocin is a first-in-class drug candidate with a mechanism that inhibits the root cause of fibrosis by selectively inhibiting Prolyl-tRNA Synthetase (PRS), a key enzyme in the collagen production process. It was designated as an Orphan Drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019, selected for the FDA’s Fast Track Development Program in 2022, and designated as an Orphan Drug by the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Park Seong-su, CEO of Daewoong Pharmaceutical, stated, “The completion of patient enrollment for this global Phase 2 IPF trial is an important turning point in the development of Bersiporocin. Based on the global clinical data, we will enhance the commercialization potential of Bersiporocin and do our best to provide a new treatment option to patients worldwide through global partnerships.”
