Chungju City Signs Taekgyeon Exchange Agreement and Presents Official Training Center Plaques in Mexico with Korea Taekgyeon Association

Chungju City is elevating the status of K-martial arts across Latin America by showcasing Taekgyeon, a traditional Korean martial art and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Chungju City announced that the "1st Latin America Taekgyeon Tournament," held over two days from July 18 to 19 at the Iztapalapa Municipal Multi-purpose Gymnasium in Mexico City, concluded successfully amidst enthusiastic interest from local residents.

A total of approximately 800 people participated in the tournament, including around 200 athletes from 20 training centers and 600 spectators, who fully enjoyed the charm of traditional Korean martial arts. Prior to the opening ceremony, the Korea Taekgyeon Association signed a business agreement with the Iztapalapa District Office for Taekgyeon exchange and mutual development, and presented official plaques and certificates to two local training centers, "Minatitlán" and "Ramos Arispe." The competition was divided into two categories: Gyeongi, a sparring match against an opponent, and Bon-tte-boegi, a competition of artistic execution. Participants of all ages, from kindergarteners to the Masters division for those over 41, took part, creating a vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of a local festival. A banner exhibition showcasing the history of Taekkyon was also held on-site. Prior to the event, the Mexico branch conducted 30 hours of referee training for 31 local instructors, while the Korea Taekkyon Association supported the event with Spanish-language textbooks and practical training, thereby solidifying the quality of the competition.

In an interview, District Head Izta Palapa, who received a plaque of appreciation from the Mayor of Chungju, expressed his delight that Taekkyon, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, has blossomed in Mexico. He shared his sentiments, stating that he would prepare even more thoroughly for next year's 2nd competition and provide active support.

The President of the Korea Taekkyon Association emphasized that Mexico is a key strategic hub in Latin America, and that this competition served as an opportunity to expand the global Taekkyon network and lay the groundwork for the successful hosting of the upcoming 17th World Taekkyon Championships. An official from Chungju City also stated that this additional opening, following the opening of 22 training centers last year, demonstrates the high potential for expansion of Taekkyon within Central and South America, and announced plans to continue expanding training centers beyond Mexico to the entire South American region, including Bolivia and Peru.
