Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education Conducts Experiential Environmental Education Training to Find Carbon Neutrality Inside and Outside the Classroom

The Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education has prepared a field-oriented capacity-building program to establish a sustainable school culture and enhance the environmental education expertise of school staff in line with the era of climate crisis. On the 20th, the Office of Education conducted an experiential field training session for approximately 30 staff members, including members of the "2050 School Environmental Education Action Team" and those committed to environmental education, allowing them to tour advanced eco-friendly facilities and schools.

Planned under the theme "In Search of Spaces of Sun, Water, and Wind," this training moved away from rote lectures and focused on exploring practical solutions applicable to the school environment by allowing participants to physically experience the actual spaces. Participants visited the Seoul Energy Dream Center and Noeul Park, representative eco-friendly buildings, to examine in depth zero-energy construction methods and examples of the efficient operation of carbon-neutral spaces. Following this, they visited Yeongnim Middle School to share vivid examples of environmental education practices that closely link school spaces with the regular curriculum. They brainstormed concrete ideas applicable to their respective schools and solidified the cooperative network within the action group.

The ‘2050 School Environmental Education Action Group,’ which spearheaded this training, is a faculty-centered implementation community that significantly strengthens on-site execution capabilities by expanding and reorganizing the existing Carbon Neutrality Action Group. Currently, approximately 100 members, including teachers and general staff, participate in leading various community-driven activities such as creating eco-friendly classrooms, resource recycling campaigns, school energy saving projects, and local ecological monitoring. They also contribute to enhancing the practical applicability of education by supporting research on the latest environmental education trends and training planning.

Kim Young-soon, Head of the Creative Special Education Division at the Provincial Office of Education, assessed the 2050 School Environmental Education Action Group as a key starting point leading the response to the climate crisis and the innovation of school environmental education. He added that he hopes this experiential training will serve as an opportunity for school staff to become active agents in creating a sustainable future, and that he will spare no administrative or financial support to ensure that a culture of voluntary environmental practice spreads widely throughout schools.
