Jeungpyeong-gun Operates 'Jeungpyeong Water Playgrounds Seen Through Children's Eyes' to Strengthen Children's Participation Rights
Jeungpyeong-gun, North Chungcheong Province, has set out to guarantee children's participation rights by launching the 'Children's Rights Monitoring Group' during the summer vacation, allowing local children to personally inspect public facilities and suggest improvement measures.
This monitoring group activity was implemented as part of the 'Out-of-School Care Space and Program Operation Project,' a special education development zone initiative. The purpose is to help children cultivate their capabilities and rights as democratic citizens by utilizing their local community as a vibrant learning environment.
This year's monitoring group consists of 18 volunteers from the 7th Jeungpyeong-gun Children's Participation Committee. The central theme of this activity is 'Jeungpyeong Water Playgrounds Seen Through Children's Eyes,' focusing on inspecting major local water play facilities from the perspective of actual users—children—and discovering practical policy ideas.
The monitoring group began its first on-site inspection at the Cheongbeong Cheongbeong Water Playground on the 25th. Children participating in the activity directly experienced the water play facilities, comprehensively examining safety, accessibility, playability, the quality of amenities, and cleanliness. They identified and recorded elements requiring improvement.
The on-site inspection activities are scheduled to expand to major local facilities, including the Jwagusan Water Sledding Park, Jeongan Village Water Playground, and Byeolcheonji Park Water Square, by early August. After completing all on-site investigations, the monitoring team will compile a report containing the strengths and weaknesses of each facility as well as requirements for improvement, and submit it to the relevant departments. Jeungpyeong County plans to use this information as foundational data for future facility repairs and the formulation of child-friendly city policies.
Prior to this, on the 24th, Jeungpyeong County held an orientation and preliminary training session at the County Office's documentation classroom to enhance participants' understanding of the monitoring process.
An official from Jeungpyeong County stated that the very process of children directly touring local sites and expressing their opinions serves as a living form of democratic citizenship education and a venue for the realization of their rights. The official added that the county will continue to expand opportunities for children's participation so that their voices can be realized through policy and facility improvements. Meanwhile, as a local government certified to the highest level of UNICEF Child-Friendly City, Jeungpyeong-gun is further solidifying its administrative system for reflecting children's opinions in policies by operating various organizations such as the Children's Participation Committee, the Children's Rights Monitoring Group, and the Infant and Toddler Sprout Communication Group.
