Government Links Three Major Industrial Complexes – Daebul, Myeongji-Noksan, and Gunsan – to Transform Shipbuilding into AI… Establishing an ‘AI Shipbuilding Supply Chain’
MOTIE Holds Joint Meeting of MINI Alliance for Three Industrial Complexes - Jointly Establishing a Full-Cycle AI Utilization System Connecting Large Shipbuilders, Equipment Suppliers, and Small & Medium-sized Shipbuilders - Also Supporting Matching of AI Suppliers and Manufacturers via On-Site Customized ‘M.AX Caravan’
(Yeongam = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (hereinafter MOOTE) is embarking on a full-scale transition to artificial intelligence (AI) across the entire supply chain connecting major shipbuilding industrial complexes to elevate the competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding industry to the next level.
MOOTE announced that it held a joint meeting of the ‘MINI Alliance’ at Hotel Hyundai in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, on the 22nd. The ‘MINI Alliance’ comprises three major industrial complexes (Daebul, Myeongji-Noksan, and Gunsan) that focus on the shipbuilding sector. The MINI Alliance is a consultative body composed of representatives from 10 demonstration industrial complexes nationwide, established to promote the spread of AI transformation (AX) within industrial parks. This meeting holds significant meaning in that it expanded AI transformation efforts, previously pursued at the individual complex level, to the entire shipbuilding supply chain. A large number of representatives from manufacturing companies, AI firms, universities, research institutes, and local governments attended the event to intensively discuss strategies for promoting the shipbuilding industry’s ‘M.AX (Manufacturing AI Transformation)’ and methods for linking industrial complexes.
The shipbuilding industry is a representative supply chain industry where major shipbuilders, small and medium-sized vessels, equipment suppliers, and subcontractors operate in an organically interconnected manner. It is also a core industry supporting the government’s ‘5 Poles, 3 Specials’ regional growth strategy. The three industrial complexes participating in this meeting each share key functions within the shipbuilding supply chain.
The Daebul Industrial Complex is a major domestic shipbuilding and marine cluster where large shipyards and collaborating SMEs are closely concentrated, playing a central role in the manufacturing of large vessels and the supply chain. The Gunsan Industrial Complex is considered a forward base for the future shipbuilding industry, as it is densely populated with manufacturers of eco-friendly and smart marine mobility products, focusing on small and medium-sized vessels.
The Myeongji-Noksan Industrial Complex is the undisputed largest shipbuilding equipment cluster in Korea, home to approximately 60% of domestic shipbuilding equipment companies, and serves as a key supplier providing solid support for the upstream industries.
Moving away from the approach where each industrial complex carries out independent tasks, the three MINI Alliances agreed to jointly establish a "full-cycle AI utilization system supporting design, production, and quality decision-making" by collecting data and connecting knowledge.
Specific M.AX linkage plans for each industrial complex were also announced at the meeting. Daebul presented a "plan to establish common infrastructure for the shipbuilding sector" for the on-site application of manufacturing data and AI models; Myeongji-Noksan announced a "plan for the development and dissemination of an AI search engine specialized for the shipbuilding industry"; and Gunsan presented a "plan for developing AI models for design simulation and manufacturing quality control." Attendees agreed that securing high-quality data determines the success or failure of AI models and requested active government support for establishing a common infrastructure for data collection, transmission, and processing in the shipbuilding sector.
Following the meeting, Minister Kim Jeong-kwan visited the site of the ‘M.AX Caravan,’ held as a side event, to inspect the cooperation status between AI suppliers and manufacturing companies and to listen to industry concerns.
The ‘M.AX Caravan’ is a field-oriented program that directly connects manufacturing companies seeking to adopt AI with AI suppliers providing solutions. It was established to spread AI supply capabilities, which are currently concentrated in the Seoul metropolitan area, to regional industrial complexes, and to break down the information gaps and technical entry barriers faced by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
At the event, 14 AI suppliers introduced their solutions, and active matching meetings took place with approximately 50 representatives from manufacturing companies in attendance. A manufacturing company representative who attended the event expressed optimism, stating, “Many local SMEs hesitated to adopt AI due to a lack of information, even though they wanted to. I believe this event will serve as a catalyst for us to embark on a practical transition to AI.” Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Kim Jeong-kwan emphasized, “The shipbuilding industry is a representative supply chain industry where numerous companies and processes operate in tandem, and it is a key axis supporting the regional economy,” adding, “We will create an ‘AI shipbuilding supply chain’ where the three hub industrial complexes jointly build and utilize data and models centered on the field to enhance the competitiveness of K-shipbuilding and make it a practical foundation for regional growth.”
