Jeonnam Human Resources & Lifelong Education Promotion Agency Receives First ‘Minister of Education Commendation’ Since Establishment… Adult Literacy Education Bears Fruit
Institutional commendation and poetry and painting exhibition awards ceremony held on the 27th at the ‘2026 Korea Literacy Education Policy Exhibition’
- 13 local literacy learners, including Ms. Jeong Young-hee from Gwangyang City, received awards… Cumulative number of awardees since 2015 reaches 98 - Leading the way in bridging the learning gap through mobile AI and digital literacy classes and the expansion of Jeonnam-style lifelong learning
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Human Resources & Lifelong Education Promotion Agency achieved a remarkable feat by receiving the Minister of Education Commendation for the first time since its establishment, in recognition of its significant contributions to revitalizing local lifelong education and expanding learning opportunities for vulnerable groups. Along with this, adult literacy learners from the Jeonnam region also won numerous awards at a national poetry and painting exhibition, proving the excellence and sincerity of Jeonnam’s lifelong education to the entire nation.
This award is a recognition established by the Ministry of Education to identify outstanding institutions, organizations, and individuals who have contributed to the development of lifelong education and the support and revitalization of literacy education, targeting local governments and related agencies nationwide, with the aim of spreading best practices. The Jeonnam Human Resources and Lifelong Education Promotion Agency was highly praised for establishing a customized literacy education system that directly visits educationally underserved areas, such as islands and remote regions with relatively low educational accessibility, and for successfully implementing multifaceted projects aimed at strengthening practical literacy and digital competencies beyond traditional Hangeul education.
In particular, the Agency launched the "Visiting AI & Digital Media Literacy Classroom" in earnest this year to adapt to the rapidly changing digital environment. Through this initiative, the agency provided on-site, hands-on training applicable immediately to daily life for local seniors and vulnerable groups. The curriculum ranged from how to use AI-based services and smartphone cameras to kiosks, YouTube content creation, and education on personal information protection and digital ethics. Furthermore, the organization has significantly enhanced social consensus and awareness regarding literacy education by independently developing and distributing specialized literacy education programs and textbooks that precisely reflect the regional characteristics of Jeonnam, while continuously holding professional development training for literacy educators and related personnel, learning outcome sharing sessions, and resident-participatory promotional and experiential events. In addition, through the expansion of lifelong education voucher support and the promotion of the "Visiting Jeonnam-style Lifelong Learning," the organization has realized universal educational welfare that enables all residents to continue learning in every corner of their lives.
The joy was doubled by the news of awards received by learners in the field. On the 27th, at the "2026 Korea Literacy Education Policy Exhibition" held at the Cheongju OSCO Convention Center, the awards ceremony for the "15th National Adult Literacy Education Poetry and Painting Exhibition" took place alongside the organization's institutional commendation ceremony. On this day, in the general public category of the poetry and painting exhibition, Ms. Jeong Young-hee, a literacy learner from Gwangyang City, won the top prize, the Minister of Education Award, for her work titled "Because Water Got on My Hands..." Ms. Jeong’s piece, which sincerely and resonantly expresses the regrets she felt over her past learning while learning to read and write late in life, as well as the joy of a life completely transformed after mastering the language, received praise from the judging panel as "a masterpiece that best demonstrates the sublime significance of literacy education in a human life." Including Ms. Jeong, a total of 13 works by learners from the Jeonnam region were ultimately selected as national-level award winners.
The Jeonnam Human Resources and Lifelong Education Promotion Agency has been continuously supporting literacy education for local seniors and the underprivileged since 2015. As a result, a total of 98 local learners have achieved remarkable success to date, winning national-level awards, including the Minister of Education Award, at the National Adult Literacy Education Poetry and Painting Exhibition.
Shim Young-hee, Acting Director of the Jeonnam Human Resources and Lifelong Education Promotion Agency, stated, “This commendation from the Minister of Education is a valuable achievement created by education officials who worked together to open the path of learning for marginalized neighbors in every learning center of Jeonnam, and by seniors who never let go of their passion for learning.” She further expressed her aspirations, saying, “Moving forward, we will further solidify a life-oriented and customized lifelong learning ecosystem that encompasses regions and generations, and continue to expand educational opportunities so that no resident of Jeonnam is excluded from learning and can enjoy the right to learn.”
