Jeonnam Agricultural Museum to Host ‘Traditional Rice Planting and Ecological Experience Event’ on June 6

Hand-planting rice in actual paddies and release of freshwater shrimp… Performances of traditional farming songs and ‘Motbap’ (rice meal) experience also included - Recruiting 100 participants on a first-come, first-served basis including elementary, middle, and high school students and their families; participation is free

(Yeongam = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Agricultural Museum announced that it will hold the ‘Traditional Rice Planting and Ecological Experience Event’ on June 6, starting at 10:00 AM. The event aims to recreate traditional rice planting methods, which are gradually disappearing due to mechanization, and to allow participants to enjoy eco-friendly ecological experiences.

The event consists of a program where participants enter actual paddies to physically experience the traditional hand-planting methods of ‘Mojjigi’ (sprouting) and ‘Mosimgi’ (planting). In particular, members of the ‘Namdo Deulnorae Preservation Society,’ a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, will participate to perform farming songs that once soothed the weary hearts of farmers and boosted their spirits. The event is also expected to vividly recreate the gradually fading rural community culture of Dure and communal gatherings. Unlike previous years, this year features a "Ranunculus Shrimp Release Experience" designed to teach the importance of eco-friendly agriculture and enhance ecological sensitivity. This is expected to offer a unique and enjoyable experience to families visiting the museum over the weekend.

After the event concludes, a time for communication will follow, allowing participants to share a traditional meal called "Motbap" and connect with the warm sentiments of the rural community.

Participation in the rice planting experience is limited to approximately 100 people, including local elementary, middle, and high school students and their families, on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is completely free, and residents wishing to participate can register via the Jeonnam Agricultural Museum website by June 5. Participants must bring their own personal items, such as a towel, hat, and change of clothes, on the day of the event. Choi Byeong-nam, Acting Director of the Jeonnam Agricultural Museum, stated, “This event will be a meaningful occasion to inherit the wisdom of agricultural culture, which is being forgotten due to mechanization, and to learn the value of hard work firsthand.” He added, “I hope many residents will participate to experience the warmth of rural life and the preciousness of our agriculture, and to have an opportunity to connect with the natural ecosystem.”
