Jeonnam Gwangju Special City Launches First ‘Muan-gun Support TF’… Accelerating Military Airport Relocation and Regional Co-prosperity

Follow-up measures to the meeting between Mayor Min Hyung-bae and Muan County Governor Kim San… Discussing practical support plans for state-funded projects – Vice Mayor Ko Gwang-wan: “We will concentrate the Special City’s administrative capabilities on realizing Muan-gun’s long-cherished projects”

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Jeonnam Gwangju Special City has embarked on active administrative support measures to resolve the issue of relocating the Gwangju Military Airport and to promote the regional development of Muan-gun.

The Integrated Jeonnam Gwangju Special City announced that it held the first meeting of the ‘Muan-gun Support Project Task Force (TF)’ at the Vice Mayor’s office in the Gwangju Government Complex on the 21st, and intensively discussed specific support and cooperation plans at the city level regarding major state-funded projects requested by Muan-gun from the government. The launch of this task force (TF) was initiated to swiftly implement the promise of mutual cooperation made during the meeting between Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of Jeonnam-Gwangju, and Kim San, Mayor of Muan County, on the 8th. At the time, the two heads agreed to cooperate closely on issues such as the military airport relocation to ensure the successful establishment of the Honam semiconductor cluster and the resolution of local pending issues.

Headed by Ko Gwang-wan, Vice Mayor for Safety and Public Welfare, this task force includes a large number of key directors and bureau chiefs from the Special City involved in support projects, while the Vice Mayor of Muan County participates directly to serve as a smooth communication channel.

At the first meeting held on this day, major national support projects that Muan County has proposed to central government ministries or is currently pursuing regarding the military airport relocation were shared from various angles. Based on the results of the administrative and financial review of Muan County's national support projects, the attendees explored strategies for the Special City and Muan County to respond jointly and achieve substantial progress in consultations with the central government.

The national support projects being pursued by Muan-gun consist of key initiatives directly linked to Muan's future growth engines, including the "establishment of a national industrial complex"—one of the three prerequisites for the military airport relocation—as well as attracting agricultural and fisheries resource research facilities, urban development, energy projects, and fostering future industries.

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City plans to operate a standing cooperation system with Muan-gun through a dedicated task force (TF) and continuously monitor and share the progress of each project. Furthermore, it intends to spare no administrative effort to strengthen collaboration among relevant departments to ensure that the support projects required by Muan-gun are implemented in a timely manner.

Ko Gwang-wan, Vice Mayor for Safety and Public Welfare, who presided over the meeting, emphasized, "For the military airport relocation to proceed at a rapid pace, practical and tangible support for the relocation target area must be provided first, and mutual cooperation between the two local governments is paramount for this." He added, "We will concentrate all administrative capabilities at the Special City level to ensure that the major projects requested by Muan-gun from the government are realized without any setbacks."
