Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council Issues Statement: "Immediately Stop Organized Hatred Toward Honam"

"Disparagement and Mockery of Honam Spread Since Semiconductor Cluster Announcement... Serious Spread of False Information" - Citing data from the May 18 Foundation, online posts containing hatred and distortion against Honam reached 9,054 over the past two years - Urging stricter sanctions on portal platforms, balanced reporting by the media, and a stern response from relevant authorities

(Break News Jeonnam-Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council expressed strong concern over the organized hatred and disparaging remarks targeting the Honam region that have been spreading online following the recent announcement of plans to establish a Southwest Semiconductor Cluster, and urged for an immediate halt to such activities.

The Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan Council made these remarks in a statement released on the 13th. Representative Lim Jong-guk (Democratic Party of Korea, Buk-gu 2), who delivered the statement on this day, pointed out, "Since the announcement of the national project, hatred and ridicule targeting the entire Jeolla region have been spreading rapidly, rather than healthy debate on the policy." He added, "False information distorting the region's industrial base and infrastructure is spreading, and baseless claims blaming even the decline in stock prices on the Honam region are being repeated."

Representative Lim also criticized the reporting practices of some media outlets, stating, "They are being criticized for consuming this conflict merely as a political confrontation, thereby contributing to the spread of hatred."

While Representative Lim prefaced his remarks by saying, "I respect criticism and verification regarding the feasibility of the semiconductor cluster's location and the direction of industrial policy, and intense debate and verification are absolutely necessary, especially for national projects," he drew a clear distinction, stating, "Criticism of policy and hatred directed at a specific region or its residents are entirely different issues." He emphasized, "Policies can be subject to criticism, but regions and people must not be targets of hatred, and regional discrimination and prejudice cannot be justified in the name of freedom of expression." In particular, the Council expressed deep concern over the reality that such regional hate sentiments are having a detrimental effect on the next generation, including youth. The statement included an anecdote in which a high school student in Gwangju lamented, "No matter how I live, it feels like the label 'Jeolla-do' will follow me for the rest of my life." Furthermore, citing data from the May 18 Memorial Foundation, it presented specific figures showing that 9,054 hateful or distorted posts related to the Honam region were identified online over the past two years.

Accordingly, the Council of the Integrated Metropolitan City of Jeonnam-Gwangju officially urged the following as immediate tasks: ▲ strengthening the monitoring and sanctioning system for hateful posts on portals and online platforms; ▲ balanced, fact-based reporting by the media; and ▲ a strict response by relevant authorities against the dissemination of false information and expressions of regional hatred. Finally, Assemblyman Lim raised his voice, stating, "The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Council, representing 3.2 million citizens, will never tolerate any form of regional hatred or discrimination," and added, "The national task of balanced development must not be undermined by regional hatred."

He further stated, "The future of the Republic of Korea can only be realized when we respect one another and grow together, rather than by excluding or ridiculing any single region," and declared, "I will continue to uphold the values of mutual prosperity between regions and national unity, and fulfill my responsibility to create a Republic of Korea where the next generation does not need to explain or make excuses for their hometown."
