Jeonnam Gwangju Fire Headquarters Donates 50 AEDs to Naju City… Establishing Nation’s First ‘Heart Safety City’
Public-private partnership with Naju City and the Korean Association of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation… Fruition of practical CPR and first aid training, including enhanced access to emergency medical care and the operation of a monthly ‘Heart Beats Day’
(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Jeonnam Gwangju Integrated Fire Headquarters has embarked on a full-scale effort to establish the nation’s first ‘Heart Safety City’ in collaboration with Naju City and the Korean Association of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
The Jeonnam Gwangju Fire Headquarters announced that it held a donation ceremony for 50 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at the Naju First Meeting Center on the 30th. This donation was undertaken to improve access to emergency medical care in mixed urban-rural areas that include medically underserved regions, and to secure the ‘golden hour’ in the event of cardiac arrest.
Since signing a business agreement with related agencies last March, the Naju Fire Department has been operating the "Heartbeat Day" every month, providing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training to approximately 2,100 citizens to date.
In particular, the practical training for citizens, proactively promoted by the Fire Department, is yielding tangible results in saving lives in real-life situations.
On June 23 in Bitgaram-dong, Naju, an 8-month-old infant collapsed due to airway obstruction, but was safely rescued thanks to the swift emergency treatment provided by a childcare worker who had completed the fire department's customized training. Furthermore, on June 26, a bystander calmly performed the Heimlich maneuver to save a 9-month-old child who was suffering from respiratory distress after choking on puffed rice, demonstrating the effectiveness of this practical, hands-on training. Lee O-sook, Head of the Integrated Fire Department, emphasized, “We plan to immediately deploy the 50 donated AEDs to key locations frequently visited by citizens,” adding, “We will further expand on-site practical training to complete a robust public-private joint life safety network where any citizen can protect the lives of their neighbors in emergency situations.”
