Okcheon-gun Mental Health and Welfare Center Operates 8-Session Emotional Stability Program for Seniors in 7 Eup/Myeon
The Okcheon-gun Mental Health and Welfare Center is running a customized healing program for seniors at high risk of depression to prevent depression and monitor their mental health.
This initiative was implemented in cooperation with the Okcheon-gun Senior Welfare Center as part of the Local Welfare Resource Utilization Project. Life support workers administered the Shortened Geriatric Depression Scale to 1,731 local seniors, identifying 139 individuals at high risk of depression.
The Center visited the selected seniors in person to conduct a second Geriatric Depression Scale test and provide professional mental health counseling, while also delivering mental health kits to help them manage their health independently in their daily lives.
Among them, 21 seniors who were classified as high-risk for depression in the second test and expressed a desire to participate in the program were finally selected. The healing program will be conducted over a total of eight sessions from August 20 to September 14. The program runs every Monday and Thursday and supports emotional stability and the alleviation of depression through activities such as stretching, meditation, terrarium making, education on preventing geriatric depression, and pre- and post-program depression scale tests.
This session prioritizes elderly residents in seven towns and townships, excluding Cheongsan-myeon and Cheongseong-myeon. A separate program for seniors in Cheongsan-myeon and Cheongseong-myeon is scheduled to be arranged after mid-October. The Center plans to operate the program by region to help more seniors benefit and to continuously manage those at high risk of depression.
Center Director Gu Baek-seon explained that close cooperation with local welfare infrastructure enabled the early detection of high-risk groups and the timely provision of customized healing services. He emphasized that the Center will continue to strengthen the linkage of community resources for isolated seniors to build an even more comprehensive mental health safety net.
