(장성=브레이크뉴스) 이학수 기자= 일제강점기 위안부 피해자들의 겪은 참혹한 고통을 위로하고, 역사의 진실을 증언한 그들의 용기를 후대에 전하기 위한 뜻깊은 행사가 열렸다.
전남광주통합특별시 장성군은 지난 14일 ‘일본군 위안부 피해자 기림의 날’을 맞아 장성읍 장성역 광장에 세워진 ‘평화의 소녀상’ 앞에서 추모 및 기념식을 거행했다.
장성청년회의소와 장성군청소년상담복지센터가 공동 주관한 이번 기념식에는 김한종 장성군수를 비롯해 차상현 장성군의회 의장 및 군의원, 지역 청소년 동아리 ‘소나무’ 학생들과 군민 등이 두루 참석했다. 참석자들은 소녀상에 헌화하고 묵념을 올리며 인권과 평화의 소중함을 다시 한번 가슴에 새겼다.
장성군은 지난 2018년 지역 사회의 뜻을 모아 장성역 광장에 ‘평화의 소녀상’을 건립한 이래, 매년 8월 14일 기림의 날마다 추모 행사를 개최하며 역사 인식 제고에 앞장서 왔다.
특히 올해 기념식은 소녀상의 소유 및 관리 주체가 민간에서 공공으로 전환된 후 열려 그 의미를 더했다. 장성군은 지난 1월 소녀상건립추진위원회로부터 ‘평화의 소녀상’을 공식 기증받았다. 이에 따라 군은 향후 관련 조례 제정을 비롯해 체계적이고 법적인 관리 근거를 강화할 방침이다.
김한종 장성군수는 추모사를 통해 “장성군으로 공식 기증된 ‘평화의 소녀상’을 법적·행정적으로 더욱 단단하게 보호하고 보존하겠다”며 “미래 세대가 올바른 역사관을 정립하고 평화와 인권의 가치를 배울 수 있는 교육의 장으로 잘 지켜나갈 것”이라고 밝혔다.
이날 행사에 참여한 청소년들과 지역 주민들은 역사의 아픔을 공유하고 올바른 역사 정의 실현을 다짐하며 성황리에 일정을 마무리했다.
