“We will address sleep and mental health issues that are difficult to resolve with medication alone through a neuroscience life care platform”… Kwon Gu-seong, Co-CEO of Resol

Sleep deprivation, chronic stress, and depressive symptoms are cited as factors that can contribute to cognitive decline and a deterioration in quality of life. As aging and mental health issues intertwine, there is a growing demand to manage 'Brain Health.' While drug treatment remains an important therapeutic tool, there is a growing awareness that it is difficult to solve all problems solely through medication due to concerns regarding addiction, tolerance, and side effects, as well as limitations in penetrating the blood-brain barrier (BBB).

In this regard, neuromodulation technology, which non-invasively modulates the function of the central nervous system and the activity of neural circuits through various physical stimuli such as magnetic fields, electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and audiovisual-based sensory stimulation, is attracting attention as a next-generation approach with the potential to complement existing treatments.

Resol Co., Ltd. is a digital healthcare company that develops non-invasive neurotech-based sleep and brain health solutions, including the sleep-inducing device 'Sleepisol'. Led by co-CEOs Dr. Lee Seung-woo, founder of Medison (now Samsung Medison), and Kwon Gu-seong, a former patent attorney, Resol started with sleep improvement wellness devices and is expanding the scope of its technology applications to include depression, dementia, concentration and performance enhancement, and chronic disease management.

Kwon Gu-seong, Co-CEO of Resol. He is developing a new digital healthcare approach in the field of brain health, including sleep, depression, and dementia, based on non-invasive neuromodulation technology.

Beyond the Limitations of Drugs, Focusing on Non-Invasive Brain Health

CEO Kwon Gu-seong does not view sleep problems as mere daily inconveniences. He believes that sleep, depression, and dementia are all interconnected within the broader framework of brain health. While drug treatment clearly remains an important means, he assesses that non-invasive neuromodulation and digital brain health technologies can serve as significant complementary alternatives in areas where long-term reliance on medication is difficult.

CEO Kwon stated, “I am not saying that we should exclude medication. There are certainly areas where medication is necessary. However, I believe that other options are needed in areas where long-term reliance on medication is burdensome, such as sleep or depression.”

He continued, “While drug treatments exist for sleep and depression, they can be accompanied by issues such as addiction, tolerance, and side effects.” He stated, “What Risol aims for is a new, non-invasive neuromodulation-based approach that can reduce drug dependence and complement existing treatments.” Regarding degenerative brain diseases such as dementia, he added, “Since it is often difficult for drugs to be sufficiently delivered to the brain, a stimulation-based approach using devices can serve as a new complementary solution.”

Risol bases its core competitive strengths on non-invasive neuromodulation technology based on DBST (Deep Brain Synchronization Technology) and adaptive closed-loop brain care technology that precisely controls stimulation by analyzing real-time biosignals and brainwave data. CEO Kwon explained the differentiators of Risol's technology by dividing them into two main points: a stimulation method designed to deliver even low-frequency brainwaves, such as those during sleep, to the deep brain, and a structure that monitors biofeedback simultaneously with stimulation and adjusts stimulation parameters according to individual responses.

CEO Kwon stated, “It is difficult to reflect individual differences with a method that provides a fixed stimulus uniformly,” adding, “Reactions are bound to vary from person to person. Even when the same stimulus is given, some may respond well while others do not. What is important is not whether the stimulus was ‘effective,’ but whether one can observe the actual response while the stimulus is being administered and make adjustments.”

He further emphasized, “Resol’s technology can identify feedback signals that occur during the stimulation process and adjust stimulation conditions accordingly.” He also explained, “If applied as a medical device in the future, we envision a direction where personalized stimulation becomes possible at home under a doctor’s prescription and supervision.”

From Sleep Devices to Neurotech Platforms… Resol’s Technology Strategy

Risol's technological competitiveness extends beyond simple hardware design. CEO Kwon is a figure with extensive experience as a patent attorney, having planned and executed IP strategies and led the IPOs of numerous companies. From the company's inception, he has made technology commercialization and securing intellectual property rights the core pillars of its growth.

Risol is building a patent portfolio centered on technologies related to DBST, neurofeedback, and brain network stimulation, and includes product design and user experience within the scope of its IP strategy.

CEO Kwon stated, “Patents regarding how the brain’s connectivity networks are activated, going beyond the level of stimulating specific points, are important to Resol,” adding, “We have designed it to protect not only the technology but also the product form and usability.”

It is in the same context that Resol invested significant time and resources into refining the design of its headband-style products. CEO Kwon stated, “The market approach for medical devices and wellness devices differs,” adding, “For hospital-use medical devices, safety, efficacy, and reliability are prioritized, whereas for consumer wellness products, comfort, weight, design, and ease of use directly influence purchasing decisions.”

This strategy is leading to tangible results. Resol first established a revenue base in the wellness market through SleepySol. The product became known primarily among professions with a high need for sleep improvement, such as nurses, flight attendants, and celebrities who suffer from sleep problems; as real-life user experiences spread online, B2C sales expanded. According to CEO Kwon, Resol recorded approximately 2.6 billion won in revenue last year and aims for over 6 billion won this year.

Risol is currently accelerating its expansion into global markets. In Japan, the company is first expanding its offline presence tailored to local market characteristics, while in the United States, it is prioritizing an online-centric sales strategy. CEO Kwon stated, "We are launching full-scale global business expansion with Japan and the U.S. as key hub markets," adding, "We plan to strengthen our brand presence in overseas markets by establishing local partnerships and sales networks."

The product lineup is also expanding. While the existing SleepySol series focuses on improving sleep, the new 'Dayzer' currently in development is a product aimed at enhancing momentary concentration and performance in activities such as learning, exercise, and e-sports.

CEO Kwon explained, “While SleepySol is a product focused on sleep and recovery, Dayzer is a solution targeting users in high-immersion environments where improved learning concentration and cognitive performance are important,” adding, “We anticipate broad expansion potential, extending to the learning and self-development markets domestically, as well as the sports, e-sports, and high-performance wellness markets overseas.”

Resol's Next Step: Expanding from Wellness to Medical Devices and the Global Market

Risol is pursuing a strategy of pursuing medical device licensing and wellness business in parallel. The approach involves verifying market potential and sales through consumer wellness products in the short term, and in the mid-to-long term, pursuing approvals for medical devices specific to indications such as depression, sleep disorders, and dementia.

CEO Kwon stated, “The field of non-invasive brain health medical devices requires significant time and capital because it necessitates going through procedures such as exploratory and confirmatory clinical trials,” adding, “Resol’s growth strategy is to first verify the market with wellness products while simultaneously pursuing the medical device approval process.”

Of course, verifying market reaction to wellness products is a completely different matter from obtaining medical device approval. There are many hurdles to overcome, including clinical trials for specific indications, verification of safety and efficacy, and designing business models with hospitals and pharmaceutical companies after approval. CEO Kwon also acknowledged this point.

He said, “The process of obtaining approval for medical devices is difficult, but it is also important to create a model for how to deliver them to patients and medical staff after approval.” Based on its experience in joint development and collaboration with domestic and international medical companies, Resol plans to gradually refine its approval strategy and business model.

The market that Resol is envisioning is not limited to sleep. While Resol is targeting the mental health sector as its primary focus, it is considering expanding the scope of its technology application to include degenerative brain diseases such as dementia, as well as the management of obesity and chronic diseases. It is also pursuing a direction to analyze and manage circadian rhythms, sleep status, and lifestyle patterns by combining digital platforms, such as the SleepBiSol Bio app, with hardware devices.

Furthermore, Resol is expanding its presence as a global neurotech company by simultaneously demonstrating its technological innovation and market potential through achievements such as the CES Innovation Award, designation as a Baby Unicorn, and the Google Best App Award. CEO Kwon stated, “It was an opportunity to confirm the potential for Resol’s technology and services to be sufficiently competitive in the global market.”

Investment and scale-up strategies are also gaining momentum. Based on recent investment, Resol is considering utilizing government support programs such as Scale-up TIPS and Global TIPS, while simultaneously expanding B2C sales, entering overseas markets, and pursuing medical device approvals. In the mid-to-long term, the possibility of an Initial Public Offering (IPO) remains open.

CEO Kwon said, “It will be pursued when the time comes to recognize the company’s fair value and lead to greater growth.”

Risol is becoming a company that can no longer be described solely as a "sleep device company." The direction emphasized by CEO Kwon is not the sale of specific devices, but the establishment of a brain health ecosystem based on non-invasive neurotech and digital health platforms. Leveraging user data and experience accumulated in the wellness market, the company is simultaneously pursuing medical device regulatory approvals, expansion of indications, and entry into the global market, while also expanding possibilities for future collaborations with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and digital health firms.

CEO Kwon said, “Sleep and mental health are ultimately issues connected to quality of life,” adding, “Resol will grow into a life care platform company capable of managing people’s brain health in their daily lives based on technology and data.”
