Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of Gwangju, Jeonnam: “Let’s Open a True ‘Regional Liberation’ Through the Overwhelming Growth of the Integrated Special City”

Congratulatory Address at the 81st Anniversary Liberation Day Celebration… Emphasized, “Let’s Change the Landscape of Life with the Power of History That Has Overcome the Impossible” First National Commemorative Event Since the Launch of the Integrated Special City… Approximately 600 Attendees, 11 Independence Meritorious Persons Awarded

(Break News Jeonnam Gwangju) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Integrated Special City of Gwangju, Jeonnam, has declared a “true regional liberation” through the overwhelming growth of the integrated city in celebration of the 81st Anniversary of Liberation Day.

At the “81st Anniversary Liberation Day Celebration” held at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center at 10 a.m. on the 15th, Min Hyeong-bae, Mayor of the Integrated Special City of Gwangju, Jeonnam, proclaimed his determination for massive regional development and change, stating, “Let us vigorously open the door to the liberation of Gwangju, Jeonnam, with the fervent power that wrote the history of liberation.”

In his celebratory address, Mayor Min emphasized, “Liberation was about reclaiming a stolen nation and opening a world where people live with dignity.” He added, “From the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the Gwangju Student Independence Movement to the May 1980 Democratization Movement, Jeonnam Gwangju has always stood at the forefront of every critical juncture in history.”

He continued, “Although we have guarded the front line of history, a long sorrow remained in our lives, a sorrow where our sons and daughters had to leave their hometowns, giving up the rice grown with blood and sweat.” He stated, “Before us, who have protected the land without losing our dignity despite the hardships and sorrows, the ‘opportunity for overwhelming growth’ in the form of the Republic of Korea’s first integrated special city has finally arrived.”

In particular, he strongly urged the overcoming of the sense of defeatism and skepticism that has taken root within the region. Mayor Min appealed, “We have had an old habit of first harboring skepticism, wondering ‘Will it really work?’ as failures and frustrations were repeated. Since the history of Jeonnam Gwangju is one of creating new paths at every moment that seemed impossible, let us now use that strength to change the landscape of our lives.” In addition, he emphasized, “Jeonnam and Gwangju, which were once divided, have become one, marking a new beginning as the Republic of Korea’s first integrated special city.” He added, “We must cultivate the power of self-determination by utilizing the authority and special provisions gained through integration, as well as the momentum for transitioning to high-tech future industries such as the semiconductor mega-cluster.”

Finally, Mayor Min added, “The true ‘regional liberation’ that Jeonnam-Gwangju must usher in is when the power of overwhelming growth leads to a better life for citizens, and when those who have lived justly live prosperously.”

This celebratory ceremony is the first national commemorative event held since the launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Approximately 600 people attended the event to share in the spirit, including Mayor Min Hyung-bae, Song Hyung-gon, Chairman of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Council, Superintendent of Education Kim Dae-jung, Ko Wook, Chairman of the Gwangju Branch of the Korean Liberation Association, Song In-jeong, Chairman of the Jeonnam Branch, local National Assembly members, heads of city, district, and county governments, bereaved families of independence movement heroes, heads of veterans’ organizations, and citizens. The event, held under the theme "Jeonnam and Gwangju United by the Power of Liberation, Opening a Greater Future Together," proceeded in the following order: screening of an opening video, national anthem, welcoming remarks, commemorative address, awards for independence activists, congratulatory remarks, commemorative performance, singing of the Liberation Day song, and a triple cheer of "Hurray!" At the awards ceremony for independence activists, awards were presented to 11 individuals (5 Presidential Commendations and 6 Mayoral Commendations) who contributed to the Republic of Korea's sovereignty and the promotion of national spirit.

Prior to the celebratory ceremony, at 9:00 AM, a tribute was paid at the Gwangju Independence Movement Memorial Tower within Sangmu Citizens' Park, attended by Mayor Min Hyung-bae, Chairman Song Hyung-gon, Superintendent Kim Dae-jung, and representatives from the Korean Liberation Association and veterans' organizations. Meanwhile, the entire ceremony of the 81st Liberation Day celebration was broadcast live on ‘Jeonnam Gwangju TV,’ the official YouTube channel of the Integrated Special City of Jeonnam-Gwangju, allowing numerous citizens to share the significance of liberation and the new beginning of the integrated city online.
