Damyang Cultural Foundation Selected for ‘2026 Dream Studio’ Competition… Stands Tall as Jeonnam’s Only Hub Institution
‘Sunshine Gathering Expedition,’ a Visual Arts Education Program Utilizing Ecological Resources such as Gwanbangjerim Forest and Juknokwon, Launches in Earnest - Securing State Funding to Create an Artist-Focused Creative Environment for Local Children and Youth
(Damyang = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Damyang Cultural Foundation (hereinafter the Foundation) in Jeonnam Province has achieved a remarkable feat by being finally selected in the competition for the ‘2026 Dream Studio Operation Project,’ hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Korea Arts Education Foundation.
With this selection, the Foundation is the only institution in Jeollanam-do to be named, thereby proving the qualitative excellence and professional capabilities of its regional arts education to the nation.
The ‘Dream Studio’ is a project that moves away from conventional, uniform classroom-based education and transforms the actual creative studios of local artists into venues for education. This government-funded project allows children and adolescents to communicate and participate as active agents of creation in a space imbued with the artist's spirit; only 20 institutions nationwide were selected following a rigorous screening process.
In particular, the Foundation has secured the continuity of the project by being designated as an official hub institution this year, building on the achievements of the stable pilot operation conducted in 2025. This is interpreted as a result of the central government highly evaluating the regional art infrastructure possessed by Damyang County and the Foundation's planning capabilities.
The program to be held in Damyang this year incorporates the region's representative symbols—such as Gwanbangjerim Forest and Juknokwon Bamboo Forest—as core educational materials. The program title, "Sunshine Collecting Expedition," embodies the meaning of "collecting" sensory elements such as light, form, and texture from nature through the eyes of children.
Rather than focusing simply on producing a final product, participating students will engage in an in-depth, "process-oriented" artistic experience where they discover inspiration in nature and reconstruct it through various visual art media, including printmaking, ceramics, photography, and installation art. Over the next six months, participants are expected to maintain close mentoring relationships with local artists, fostering artistic growth that goes beyond mere technical skill acquisition to express their selves.
The Foundation anticipates that this project will serve as a significant turning point in overcoming cultural marginalization and providing future generations in Damyang, a region facing population decline, with opportunities to enjoy art in their daily lives.
A Foundation official stated, "We hope that children will perceive art not as something distant and special, but as something that lives alongside Damyang's nature and daily lives." The official added, "Taking this selection as an opportunity, we will combine Damyang's unique ecological resources with talented local artists to firmly establish a sustainable arts and culture education model that can be expanded nationwide."
The 'Sunshine Gathering Expedition' is recruiting participants from the third to the fourth week of May. The recruitment is open to 40 elementary school students (grades 2 through 6) within Damyang, and selected students will join a diverse creative journey alongside professional artists. For detailed schedules and application methods regarding the project, please check the Damyang County Cultural Foundation website or contact the Foundation's Arts Promotion Team.
