What the People Power Party Needs Is ‘Alternatives’ Beyond ‘Opposition’!

- Columnist Jung Sung-tae

From a Party Waiting for the Democratic Party’s Failure to a Governing Party Chosen by the People

For the People Power Party to stand tall as a governing party enjoying broader public support, it must not merely remain confined to criticizing and opposing the ruling power. A fundamental transformation must precede it, transforming it into a policy-oriented party that presents appropriate alternatives and a trustworthy party that communicates effectively. Furthermore, the perception that they blindly shield the ruling party simply because it is on their side must be shattered.

The results of various recent public opinion polls are interpreted as a warning to the People Power Party and a sign of an existential crisis. Even amidst the Lee Jae-myung administration’s repeated mismanagement and the Democratic Party’s runaway excesses, the People Power Party’s approval rating shows little sign of recovery. This suggests that while voters criticize the government and ruling party’s unilateral actions, they are simultaneously failing to find hope in the opposition party.

What the People Power Party Needs Is ‘Alternatives’ Beyond ‘Opposition’! The current powerlessness facing the opposition party demonstrates that the familiar past method of profiting from the opponent's mismanagement is no longer effective. This serves as proof that the People Power Party is failing to discern an "alternative future." In other words, the public's sentiment extends beyond mere dislike of the current administration; it encompasses a question of whether the People Power Party, as the main opposition party, can be entrusted with the next administration, as well as a sense of trust regarding that trust.

First and foremost, as the main opposition party, it has failed to properly establish a single clear policy agenda that penetrates the lives of the people. Critics point out that the party is merely preoccupied with blaming the ruling power for mismanagement, while its ability to present alternatives is minimal. Nor does it demonstrate a coordinated offensive capability. There is a strong sense that it is failing to move the hearts of the people in any way.

A more painful point is the "loss of self-correcting ability." Through the Representative Lee Jin-sook scandal, the public confirmed the party's distorted historical perspective and its lack of empathy for the public. This is not merely a problem of a single politician, but rather stems from the fact that the internal system capable of filtering out wrongdoings and correcting itself has failed to function properly. It is bizarre that, despite the emergence of a shocking scandal, some within the People Power Party actually defended Representative Lee.

Such avoidance of self-censorship even amidst a crisis acts as an obstacle that traps the People Power Party in negative memories of the past. An organization that fails to break away from its own wrongdoings loses even the justification to fend off external attacks. The public can only place their hopes on the party if it demonstrates a "self-correcting ability" by responding swiftly and decisively when words or actions deviate significantly from public expectations or when illegal or unjust acts occur.

Furthermore, the People Power Party faces a severe test amidst a mountain of obstacles, including internal and external conflicts that have yet to subside. In particular, the party's apparent tendency to be excessively swayed by the voices of some hardline supporters or political YouTubers is also hindering its expansion. This inevitably leads to a limitation that is far removed from general public sentiment. Consequently, the harsh reality is that the party is failing to even reap the benefits of the backlash resulting from the ruling power's mismanagement. Ultimately, it is tantamount to having lost the momentum to prove its worth.

Another issue that must be addressed is that the party remains stuck in reactive politics. There is a strong sense that it is mired in "reactive politics," scrambling to respond to erupting issues rather than proactively presenting a vision for the future. It will be difficult to win the hearts of the people if the party becomes bogged down in performative resistance instead of presenting sophisticated alternatives when the Lee Jae-myung administration pushes forward flawed policies. Moreover, if this direction loses its compass, it will ultimately backfire.

Nothing in the universe remains unchanged. A political party that fears change is bound to be pushed to the sidelines of the times. The People Power Party currently stands at the threshold of that change. Simply engaging in struggle is not the answer. The party must be able to answer the fundamental questions of why it engages in politics and why it deserves the people's choice. Without a sincere spirit of love for the people and self-innovation, this will only result in a self-defeating move that pushes it into the shadows of history.

Now, the party must present a clear vision to the people regarding what it intends to change, how it intends to change it, and what it intends to bring about. It is a task to restore the collapsed rule of law and look after the livelihoods of the weary people. Furthermore, only by demonstrating strict self-ethics can the People Power Party shed the stigma of being a dead party and be recognized as a future alternative force.

The opposition party is required to offer strong resistance and struggle against the arrogance and self-righteousness of the government and the ruling party. However, the direction of this struggle is just as important. Along with this, it must not rely solely on fighting power, but must be equipped with the "weapon of trust"—transparent morality and meticulous policy alternatives. I believe that only when the People Power Party shakes off the old temptations of the past and becomes "on the side of the people" equipped with common sense and dignity will it be able to break free from the perception of being a powerless party and restart the engine toward a new future.

If the People Power Party is to regain the people's choice, even now, it must break away from being a party that waits for the Democratic Party to fail. It must prove for itself what makes it better than the Democratic Party and what it intends to change and how. It must move beyond being an opposition party that merely criticizes the administration and become an opposition party possessing the capacity and trust to be entrusted with power. That is the most urgent task currently facing the People Power Party.
