Combining Global Blockchain Technology with Financial Services… Proactive Response to Future Financial Environment - Plans to Expand to Overseas Remittances Starting with a Proof of Concept (POC) for Cafeteria Payment and Settlement Technology in the Second Half of 2026
(Gwangju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-soo = Gwangju Bank is partnering with the global blockchain platform Solana Foundation to embark on a full-scale expansion of its digital asset ecosystem.
Gwangju Bank announced that it signed a "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Cooperation on Digital Asset Payment and Ecosystem Establishment" with the Solana Foundation (Chairperson Lily Liu) on the 19th.
Key officials from both organizations attended the signing ceremony, including Byun Mi-kyung, Vice President of Gwangju Bank's Digital Division; Lily Liu, Chairperson of the Solana Foundation; and Lee Sung-san, Representative of the Solana Foundation Korea.
This agreement was established to explore new business opportunities in the digital asset sector and proactively respond to the rapidly changing future financial environment by combining the world-class blockchain technology possessed by the Solana Foundation with Gwangju Bank's robust financial service capabilities.
Under the agreement, the two organizations plan to pursue close cooperation in various areas, including: exchanging information and conducting joint research regarding Solana's blockchain technology and network-based payment infrastructure; reviewing the feasibility of applying stablecoin-based overseas remittance models; and identifying cooperation agendas in the digital asset sector.
In particular, Gwangju Bank will proceed in stages with a "Proof of Concept (POC) for cafeteria payment and settlement network technology" utilizing the Solana blockchain. Starting with the cafeteria payment and settlement demonstration in the second half of 2026, the plan is to expand the scope of the demonstration to include stablecoin-based overseas remittances (cross-border payments) in the future.
Through this, the bank aims to verify the effectiveness of blockchain-based payment and settlement technology and lay the groundwork for the future expansion of digital asset financial services.
Gwangju Bank expects this collaboration to go beyond mere technology exchange and serve as a significant turning point for strengthening practical capabilities in the digital asset finance sector and developing next-generation financial services.
Byun Mi-kyung, Vice President of Gwangju Bank, stated, “This agreement marks a meaningful opportunity for Gwangju Bank to establish a foundation for cooperation in the digital asset sector with a global blockchain institution.” She added, “Through collaboration with the Solana Foundation, we will thoroughly examine the potential for innovation in payment and remittance infrastructure and continuously enhance our competitiveness in the digital asset field.”
