Gyeongsangnam-do Begins Full-Scale Efforts to Become a ‘Global Aerospace Capital’ Marking the 2nd Anniversary of the Korea Aerospace Agency

Pushing to Attract an Aircraft Engine Specialization Complex and the Aerospace Industry Promotion Agency… Accelerating Strategy to Become One of the Top 5 Aerospace Powerhouses

Taking the occasion of the "2nd Aerospace Day," Gyeongsangnam-do has set out in earnest to foster the aerospace industry centered on Sacheon and strengthen its role as a hub for implementing national policies.

On the 27th, Gyeongsangnam-do attended the "2nd Aerospace Day" commemorative ceremony held at the Korea Aerospace Agency to celebrate the agency's second anniversary and announced plans to strengthen industrial and policy cooperation to help South Korea become one of the top five aerospace powerhouses. Approximately 100 key officials attended the event to reflect on the significance of Space & Aviation Day, including Gyeongnam Vice Governor for Economic Affairs Kim Myung-joo, Korea Aerospace Administration Administrator Oh Tae-seok, National Assembly Science, Technology, Broadcasting and Communications Committee Chairperson Choi Min-hee, National Assembly Members Choi Hyung-doo and Seo Cheon-ho, Gyeongsang National University President Kwon Jin-hoe, former Administrator Yoon Young-bin, the Presidents of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, the CEO of Korea Aerospace Industries, and representatives of local aerospace companies.

Gyeongnam Province assessed that since the establishment of the Korea Aerospace Administration, the country's largest aerospace industry cluster centered in Sacheon has transitioned to the implementation phase as national policy functions have been integrated.

The province is pursuing four major strategies—advancing the advanced aviation industry ecosystem, establishing a New Space industry hub, creating a future aviation technology ecosystem, and completing the status of a global aerospace capital—with the goal of achieving 30 trillion won in production value for aerospace companies and fostering 20 companies with annual sales exceeding 100 billion won by 2035. In particular, the province plans to concentrate its administrative capabilities on the designation of the ‘National Advanced Strategic Industry Specialized Complex for Advanced Aerospace Engines’ and the attraction of the ‘Aerospace Industry Promotion Agency’ to Gyeongnam, both scheduled for the second half of this year.

Additionally, it aims to foster the ‘2026 Sacheon Airshow Aerospace & Defense Exhibition’ into an international industrial platform to attract global aerospace, defense, and space companies and buyers.

Taking advantage of this Aerospace Day, Gyeongnam Province is also operating linked programs, such as the Governor’s Commendation for Distinguished Contributors to the Aerospace Industry and Investment (IR) briefings, while accelerating the expansion of the foundation for the convergence of policy, industry, and culture.

Kim Myung-joo, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs, stated, “This marks a turning point for Gyeongnam to leap beyond being the center of Korea’s aerospace industry to becoming a hub for the global space economy,” adding, “We will focus on building an aerospace ecosystem where industry, technology, and talent are interconnected in cooperation with the Korea Aerospace Agency.”
