Gyeonggi Province Encourages Migrant Voters to Vote in Local Elections… Distributing Promotional Materials in 13 Languages
Foreign residents aged 18 and older who have held permanent residency for 3 years are eligible to vote.
Gyeonggi Province announced that it has produced and distributed multilingual promotional posters to increase voter turnout among migrant voters in the province ahead of the 9th National Simultaneous Local Elections to be held on June 3.
According to the current Public Official Election Act, even foreign residents are eligible to cast a valuable vote in local elections if they meet the following criteria: ▲ they are 18 years of age or older; ▲ three years have passed since they acquired permanent residency; and ▲ they are registered on the foreign resident registry of the relevant local government.
However, many migrant voters have struggled to exercise their right to vote due to language barriers and limited access to information, which prevented them from obtaining election information in a timely manner.
In response, Gyeonggi Province has planned customized multilingual promotional materials to enable migrants to access election-related information more easily and accurately. The promotional materials produced this time are available in a total of 13 languages, including Korean, English, Chinese, Vietnamese, Uzbek, and Nepali. In particular, illustrations were actively utilized to ensure that even those with reading difficulties can easily and intuitively understand the content. The materials also contain detailed information on the main voting day, early voting schedules, and the rights and significance of participating in the election.
The province plans to distribute these materials intensively through major migrant support organizations within the province, such as the Gyeonggi Foreigner Welfare Center and Family Centers, as well as through migrant communities from various countries and social media channels. In addition, face-to-face promotional activities will be conducted in parallel by utilizing the tightly established field network, including Gyeonggi Foreign Resident Honorary Ambassadors and the Migrant Policy Promotion Team.
Yoon Hyun-ok, Head of the Immigration and Social Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, stated, "Migrants are also proud residents and important members living together in our local community," adding, "We will continue to provide multilingual guidance and promotional support to ensure that migrant voters do not experience any disadvantages or difficulties due to language barriers during the voting and election process."
