Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) announced that it held an awarding ceremony for its ‘Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL)’ certification from the U.S.-based global safety certification organization, UL Solutions, at its Geoje Shipyard on April 28.
The ceremony was attended by Namgung Geum-seong, Vice President and Head of SHI’s Geoje Shipyard, and Yoon Hye-jin, Executive Director of UL Solutions Korea, among others.
The ZWTL certification is an eco-friendly credential awarded based on an assessment of the rate at which a business site recycles its waste instead of sending it to a landfill, serving as a global benchmark for evaluating a company’s resource circulation efforts.
Due to the nature of its processes, the shipbuilding industry generates a wide variety of waste that is difficult to treat, making resource circulation more challenging compared to other sectors.
As a result of continuously improving its waste management system to increase its waste recycling rate, Samsung Heavy Industries has become the first in the shipbuilding industry to receive this certification.
First, the company completely overhauled its waste classification system, sorting all waste generated at its sites by type and property in accordance with its self-established waste classification procedure manual. It also enhanced the recovery rate of recyclable resources by linking a manual sorting process to a subsequent mechanical sorting process.
Furthermore, the company advanced its waste management standards by conducting technical collaborations and receiving professional consulting from the Ministry of Environment and the Korea Environment Corporation, while also establishing a real-time monitoring management system.
Previously, in March of this year, Samsung Heavy Industries had become the first in the industry to obtain ‘Circular Resource Recognition’ from the Nakdonggang River Basin Environmental Office for four types of nationally managed waste: slag, dust, waste wood, and waste foamed synthetic resin (styrofoam).
Namgung Geum-seong, Head of the Geoje Shipyard at Samsung Heavy Industries, stated, “The ZWTL and Circular Resource Recognition are the achievements of Samsung Heavy Industries’ efforts in waste recycling,” adding, “We will further strengthen our resource circulation system.”
