South Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Group is reorganizing its internal structure to expand the application of robotics in smart factories.
According to industry sources on Tuesday, Hyundai Motor Group carried out an organizational restructuring within its Manufacturing Solutions Division by establishing a new dedicated unit, Robot Manufacturing Solution Strategy Team and renaming several existing departments.
The newly created team is expected to go beyond simple technology development and instead coordinate strategies for applying robots on manufacturing sites, building automation systems, and improving production operation efficiency.
Hyundai Motor Group also renamed its existing Manufacturing Capability Enhancement Promotion Team to the Robot Manufacturing Technology Team and the Parts Competitiveness Enhancement Team to the Robot Parts Manufacturing Technology Team.
The Robot Application Solution Support Team was also renamed the Robot Application Solution Team.
The core of the restructuring is the conglomerate’s decision to place robotics at the center of its manufacturing organization.
Industry observers interpret this as more than a simple name change – it signals Hyundai Motor Group’s intention to actively incorporate robotics into its manufacturing strategy.
While production technology divisions previously focused mainly on improving manufacturing efficiency, the key priority going forward is expected to be building AI- and robot-based automation systems.
Industry analysts view this as a sign that Hyundai Motor Group plans to significantly expand the use of robots within its smart factories. The strategy appears to position robotics as a central pillar in automating production processes and establishing AI-driven manufacturing operating systems.
Earlier this year at Consumer Electronics Show 2026, Hyundai Motor Group unveiled Boston Dynamics Inc.’s humanoid robot Atlas and indicated the robot could eventually be deployed at manufacturing sites. The company is also expected to gradually expand the use of logistics and mobile robots in factories.
The restructuring aligns with Hyundai Motor Group‘s broader expansion of E-FOREST, the group’s software-driven smart manufacturing platform integrating AI, data and robotics into factory operations. Hyundai Motor also transferred the reorganized units to the E-FOREST Center.
Analysts said the automaker’s manufacturing strategy is also shifting from volume expansion toward automated, labor-efficient and high-efficiency production systems.
The Manufacturing Solution Division is a core manufacturing unit within Hyundai Motor Group’s vehicle operations overseen by Vice Chair Chang Jae-hoon.
Last year, Hyundai Motor appointed President Jung Jun-cheol to lead the manufacturing division as part of efforts to integrate production technology and factory operations under a unified manufacturing system aimed at improving efficiency and accelerating the smart factory transition.
Separately, Park Min-woo, president and head of Hyundai Motor‘s Advanced Vehicle Platform (AVP) division, held a town hall meeting last week with robotics lab employees transferred from the research and development division to the AVP division. Park reportedly shared the lab’s mid- and long-term strategy and discussed plans to commercialize the robotics business.
