GC Biopharma announced on May 14 that it has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Merck Life Science, a global science and technology company, for cooperation in biopharmaceutical development and GMP manufacturing processes.

The signing ceremony was held at the Merck Korea headquarters in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and was attended by figures including Young-lim Kim, Head of Process Solutions Business, Life Science at Merck, and Woong Shin, Head of Operations Division at GC Biopharma.

Through this agreement, GC Biopharma plans to strengthen cooperation on the supply of raw and subsidiary materials necessary for the production of its major biopharmaceuticals and establish a cooperative framework to enhance manufacturing process efficiency and improve supply stability.

In particular, GC Biopharma expects to secure a stable production system for its key portfolio products, such as the plasma-derived medicine ‘Alyglo’, which was launched in the U.S. market, and the Hunter syndrome treatment ‘Hunterase’, enabling a more flexible response to global market demand.

To this end, Merck will provide a cooperative framework covering the entire production process, from securing raw materials to providing process technology support. In particular, the plan is to proactively manage potential supply chain risks in the manufacturing process by ensuring a stable supply of product batches that meet strict internal quality control standards.

The two companies plan to operate a regular technical and process council to strengthen technical cooperation for enhancing manufacturing process efficiency. Through this, they will share the latest process technology information and boost quality competitiveness, while also continuously exploring opportunities for joint research and development (R&D) to solidify the partnership.

Woong Shin, Head of Operations Division at GC Biopharma, said, “This cooperation will be an opportunity to solidify the production and supply foundation for major rare disease treatments and essential medicines,” adding, “Through close technical cooperation and process optimization, we will minimize risks across the entire manufacturing process and build a pharmaceutical production system with world-class quality competitiveness.”

Young-lim Kim, Head of Process Solutions Business, Life Science at Merck, stated, “Merck has been striving to strengthen our customers’ production capabilities based on our global technological expertise. Through this collaboration, we will support an optimal production environment to ensure a stable supply of GC Biopharma’s core treatments.” She added, “Going forward, Merck will continue to work towards enhancing the competitiveness and production efficiency of the domestic pharmaceutical and biotech industry.”
