"Moving a 23kg Refrigerator": Atlas Robot Suggests Possibility of Field Deployment

Boston Dynamics has released a video showing its humanoid robot, 'Atlas,' lifting and moving a small refrigerator. This demonstrates the robot's advanced control capabilities, leading to assessments that it has developed to a level where it can effectively be deployed in industrial settings.

Boston Dynamics, a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group, released a video of Atlas in action on its official YouTube channel on the 18th (local time).

In the video, Atlas stably lifts the refrigerator, moves it while maintaining balance, and then rotates its upper body 180 degrees to carefully place the refrigerator down on a table.

The company explained that Atlas is now evolving beyond the stage of simple laboratory demonstrations to a level where it can be applied in actual industrial settings.

According to the company, Atlas is designed to transport objects of varying weight and size. Notably, it estimates the condition of an object based on sensors mounted on it, even without prior input of information about the object to be moved.

By incorporating these technologies, the robot is now capable of performing movement and object manipulation as a single continuous motion. It was emphasized that this signifies the robot has secured the task performance capabilities required in actual industrial settings.

It was stated that this task performance capability is the result of simulation-based reinforcement learning, which involves mimicking human behavior by watching videos. Furthermore, it was noted that Atlas learned optimal task planning and operational methods through repeated experiences of success and failure.

It was reported that the recently released video demonstrates the robot independently planning and executing a series of tasks, including approaching a refrigerator, recognizing objects, lifting, and moving.

Additionally, although not shown in the video, it was added that Atlas successfully transported a refrigerator weighing up to 45 kg through simulation learning.

Along with this, a behind-the-scenes video was released featuring scenes of Atlas performing a 360-degree rotation or a backflip while balancing on one leg. It was explained that performing maneuvers like handstands and backflips, which are difficult even for humans, is a key process for verifying the robot's balance, flexibility, and ability to recover after falling.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group plans to accelerate the commercialization of next-generation robotics through the convergence of robot and AI technologies, including conducting strategic collaborations with Google DeepMind to develop future humanoid technology.
