Hwasun County Goes ‘All Out’ on Dredging Hwasun Stream to Prepare for Summer Floods… Establishes Jeonnam’s First Public-Private Collaboration Model
Securing Water Flow Cross-Sections by Removing Sediment and Obstructions from Local Streams… Preemptive Response to Prevent Flood Damage Joining Hands with the Jeonnam Chapter of the Korea Specialty Construction Association to Save Budget and Strengthen Disaster Prevention Capabilities, Killing Two Birds with One Stone
(Hwasun = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Hwasun County, Jeonnam Province, is accelerating maintenance projects along Hwasun Stream to prepare for natural disasters such as summer torrential rains and typhoons. In particular, this project is drawing attention as Jeonnam’s first innovative example of public-private cooperation, where administrative agencies and the construction industry have joined hands.
On the 13th, Hwasun County announced that it is currently carrying out the ‘Sediment Dredging and Obstruction Removal Project’ at Hwasun Stream, a local stream located in the Daji-ri area of Hwasun-eup.
Accumulated sediment and overgrown bushes within the stream obstruct water flow, serving as a major cause of rising water levels and flooding during torrential rains. Accordingly, the county plans to eliminate disaster vulnerabilities in advance by ensuring sufficient water flow cross-sections in the rivers before the rainy season begins in earnest.
This maintenance project is being carried out with Hwasun County investing 46.5 million won in project funds, while the Jeonnam Chapter of the Korea Association of Specialized Construction Contractors (Chairman Kang Seong-jin) is providing construction equipment worth approximately 30 million won free of charge. This is recognized as an exemplary case of a private organization voluntarily contributing to regional safety.
On this day, officials including Deputy County Governor Lee Ho-beom and Chairman Kang Seong-jin, who conducted an on-site inspection, reviewed the progress of the project and discussed measures to strengthen disaster prevention capabilities based on public-private cooperation to respond to extreme weather events.
Deputy County Governor Lee Ho-beom emphasized, “This project is a very meaningful example of the administration and the construction industry coexisting to resolve local issues,” adding, “We will continue to do our utmost to protect the lives and property of residents by proactively responding to extreme heavy rainfall caused by the climate crisis.” Hwasun County expects that this project will significantly improve the safety of nearby farmlands and residents' living areas that were at risk of chronic flooding.
