HMM’s ‘Namu’ Hit by External Attack in Strait of Hormuz; Government Struggles with Response

As it has been confirmed that the HMM cargo ship 'Namuho' was subjected to an external attack in the Strait of Hormuz, attention is focused on how the government will respond.

According to a summary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' investigation report released on the 11th, two unidentified aircraft struck the stern of the Namuho on the 4th. The aircraft struck the outer plating of the port-side ballast tank at approximately one-minute intervals twice, and flames and smoke accompanied by vibrations were emitted following the impact.

It was confirmed that the impact caused damage to the port stern plating, extending approximately 5 meters in width and 7 meters deep into the hull.

While some debris from the aircraft was recovered from the scene, further investigation is required to determine whether the unidentified aircraft were drones or missiles. The stance is that further investigation is also needed regarding the perpetrator of the attack.

However, reports suggesting the possibility of an attack by Iran have continued to appear in the U.S. media and elsewhere. According to the Associated Press, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed regarding the explosion of the Namuho that "Iran fired at nations unrelated to the war, including the South Korean cargo ship."

Iran's state-run Press TV also reported on the 6th that "the South Korean vessel was targeted for violating maritime regulations," leading to criticism that this amounts to a de facto self-admission that Iran carried out the attack.

However, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Park Il stated, "We do not wish to prejudge the perpetrator at this time," adding that even if it is confirmed to be the work of Iran, it is necessary to distinguish whether it was an intentional attack or an accidental incident.

As the government expressed a cautious stance even after our vessel was struck, voices of criticism erupted from the political sphere.

On the 11th, lawmakers from the People Power Party belonging to the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee and the National Defense Committee rebuked the government's passive response, stating, "The government's response to the attack on our vessel near the Strait of Hormuz was far from these basics. It is highly unusual even when compared to the response of the international community."

** At the same time, he criticized the government, stating, "Despite clear indications of an attack, the government failed to clearly define it," and added, "They are desperate to cover it up even though the Republic of Korea has been attacked."

On the other hand, Kang Deuk-gu, a Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party of Korea, rebutted via social media on the 10th, asking, "Then should we go to war with Iran right now? Is political infighting more urgent than the safety of the isolated sailors?" He continued, "Does this mean they don't care if the country falls into crisis as long as it serves their own political interests? This is the exact same mindset as Yoon Suk-yeol, who instigated the December 3rd rebellion. The People Power Party, a party that uses the safety of the people as a political tool, is indeed a party of rebellion."

Meanwhile, this incident is expected to influence whether South Korea participates in military operations in the Strait of Hormuz. However, given that participation in U.S.-led coalition operations inevitably leads to a deterioration of relations with Iran, the government's deliberations on how to respond are likely to continue for some time.
