Korea Forest Disaster Safety Technology Corporation Conducts ‘On-site Landslide Safety Education’ in Gwangju and Jeonnam
Sequential sessions held in Goheung-gun on June 4 and Yeongam-gun on June 9… Preemptive response to torrential rains - On-site registration available, emergency first aid supplies provided to all participants - Corporation, launched as an integrated body in April of this year, expected to play a pivotal role in forest disaster prevention
(Naju = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = The Korea Forest Disaster Safety Technology Corporation is taking preemptive measures to protect the lives and property of residents in cities and provinces in preparation for localized torrential rains this summer.
The Corporation announced that it will begin full-scale ‘On-site Landslide Safety Education’ for residents and relevant public officials in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions starting in June.
This education is a community-oriented prevention program prepared in response to the expectation that this year’s rainy season will pose a greater risk of localized torrential rains and landslides than any other year due to higher-than-average temperatures and severe atmospheric instability.
The first training session will be held on June 4 at the Goheung-gun Cultural Center, targeting approximately 100 participants including residents from landslide-prone areas and relevant public officials. Following this, the second session is scheduled to take place on June 9 at the Wangin Room of the Yeongam County Office, targeting residents of Yeongam.
The main training content is designed to help residents intuitively understand the risks of forest disasters by utilizing videos of representative landslide cases from both domestic and international sources. Furthermore, the focus is on providing practical measures, such as how to recognize warning signs of landslides during heavy rainfall and evacuate safely in advance, as well as landslide prevention methods through the construction of check dams.
General citizens are also free to participate in this training by registering on-site. All participants will be provided with emergency first-aid supplies useful in the event of a disaster, including flashlights, whistles, and blankets. Local governments, middle and high schools, or other municipalities wishing to receive additional training can apply through the Corporation's training office. Meanwhile, the Korea Forest Disaster Safety Technology Corporation, which is organizing this training, is an organization that officially launched on April 10 of this year in line with the ‘Forest Disaster Prevention Act’ enacted last February.
In accordance with the Korea Forest Service’s intent to strengthen response capabilities by consolidating forest disaster management tasks—such as forest fires, landslides, and pine wilt disease—that were previously managed separately by different agencies, three organizations were integrated: the Korea Forest Fire Prevention Association, the Korea Forestry Technology Association, and the Forest Pest and Disease Monitoring Center of the Korea Forestry Promotion Institute. Moving forward, it will assume a pivotal role in forest disaster prevention, safety, and the development of new technologies in South Korea.
Park Hyung-ho, Head of the Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Forest Disaster Safety Technology Corporation, emphasized, “We will concentrate all our efforts on the ‘On-site Landslide Safety Education’ for village residents, middle and high school students, and relevant public officials throughout the month of June,” adding, “We will actively respond to thoroughly protect the precious property and lives of citizens and residents and prevent disasters.”
