Korea Expressway Corporation Chungbuk Headquarters Launches Promotional Campaign with Traffic Accident Prevention Character

63% of Traffic Accident Fatalities in April-May Over the Past 5 Years Caused by Drowsiness and Inattention

The Korea Expressway Corporation Chungbuk Headquarters announced that it is introducing a new accident prevention character, "Josimhaeyu," and conducting various traffic safety promotional activities to prevent expressway traffic accidents caused by driver inattention.

It was found that over the past five years (2021–2025), 12 out of 19 traffic accident fatalities (63%) on expressways within Chungbuk Province during April and May were caused by drowsiness and inattention. In particular, spring is a time when the risk of drowsy driving accidents increases due to spring fatigue caused by the sudden warming of the weather.

Accordingly, the Korea Expressway Corporation Chungbuk Headquarters is promoting various campaigns utilizing the character to raise awareness of the dangers of drowsy driving and failure to pay attention to the road ahead.

The newly introduced "Josimhaeyu" is a character created using the friendly dialect of the Chungcheong region. It was designed to convey traffic safety rules, which can otherwise feel rigid, to drivers without causing resistance and to raise awareness.

**Korea Expressway Corporation Chungbuk Headquarters Launches Promotional Campaign with Traffic Accident Prevention Character** The character is being utilized on Variable Message Signs (VMS) at key highway locations, banners, and promotional materials (such as anti-drowsiness gum and wet wipes) to convey both a sense of friendliness and the dangers of drowsiness simultaneously. In addition, customized safety campaigns are planned, including the broadcasting of related short videos via Bus Information Terminals (BITs) and traffic broadcasts in areas such as Cheongju, Jincheon, and Jecheon.

Furthermore, the Chungbuk Regional Headquarters urged drivers to exercise special caution and emphasized "drowsy driving prevention guidelines," which include taking a 15-minute break after two hours of driving, ventilating the vehicle interior every 30 minutes, and using anti-drowsiness gum or beverages.

Lim Jong-taek, Head of the Korea Expressway Corporation's Chungbuk Regional Headquarters, stated, "Drivers' own vigilance is paramount to preventing accidents caused by drowsy driving in the spring," adding, "We will continue to expand various traffic safety campaigns utilizing the 'Josimhaeyu' character."
