Korea National University of Transportation’s Chungbuk Science and Culture Hub Center Strengthens Youth’s Creative Inquiry Capabilities through Experiential Science Education
Korea National University of Transportation successfully hosted the Youth Science and Technology Camp, "Science Talk Talk! Envisioning Future Chungbuk," for elementary and middle school students in Chungcheongbuk-do, in collaboration with the Chungbuk National University Life Science Classroom Operation Center and the Science and Technology Promotion Center.
This camp was designed to foster future talent through science and technology education linked to Chungcheongbuk-do’s key industries, and to cultivate core competencies for the future society, such as problem-solving skills, creativity, and collaboration, among participating students. Students had the opportunity to broaden their understanding of science and technology and explore career paths by participating in experience-oriented programs that utilized the university’s specialized personnel and educational infrastructure.
Participants acquired a multifaceted understanding of core scientific principles—such as Bernoulli’s principle, structural engineering, microorganisms and fermentation, and the properties of matter and acids and bases—through practical exercises and experiments. In particular, the camp was conducted in an inquiry-based manner that organically linked theoretical lectures with experiments, allowing students to experience the process of independently identifying principles and solving problems. Furthermore, by providing field-oriented education that directly utilizes university laboratories and educational facilities, the program has realized a high level of science education that is difficult to access within the standard school curriculum.
This camp is evaluated as an experiential science education model that incorporates the outstanding infrastructure of a local university. It is recognized for not only enhancing the scientific inquiry capabilities and creative thinking of youth but also serving as an opportunity to broaden the scope of career exploration in the science and technology sector.
An official from the Chungbuk Science and Culture Hub Center at Korea National University of Transportation expressed hope that the experience of directly experiencing and exploring science using the university's excellent infrastructure would serve as a valuable foundation for youth in designing their future careers. The official also stated that they will continue to expand cooperation with local universities and related organizations to provide diverse opportunities for youth to experience science and technology.
Meanwhile, the Chungbuk Science and Culture Hub Center at Korea National University of Transportation is actively operating after being designated as the Chungbuk regional hub institution for the 2026 Regional Science and Culture Capacity Building Project. Funded by the Science and Technology Promotion Fund and the Lottery Fund, and supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Foundation for Science and Creativity, the Lottery Commission, and Chungcheongbuk-do Province, the center is currently in full swing. The Center is pursuing a variety of projects to expand opportunities for residents to enjoy science culture and to foster a regional science culture ecosystem.
