Hadong County Strengthens Response to Overseas Influx of Ebola… Urges Caution for Visitors to Africa

KDCA Issues ‘Attention’ Level Alert… Recommends Checking for Symptoms for 21 Days After Entry

Following outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in some African countries, Hadong County in South Gyeongsang Province has begun providing guidance on infection prevention to overseas travelers.

Hadong County announced that it has urged caution for overseas visitors following the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) recently issuing an Ebola virus disease crisis alert at the ‘Attention’ level, in light of the World Health Organization (WHO)’s declaration of a global public health emergency.

While the KDCA assesses the likelihood of domestic entry as low, it is strengthening its preemptive response system in consideration of the global epidemic situation.

Ebola virus disease is an acute hemorrhagic infectious disease transmitted through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of infected animals, patients, or deceased individuals. Initially, symptoms similar to the common cold, such as fever, headache, muscle pain, and loss of appetite, appear, but they can later progress to vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bleeding. Hadong County urged residents to check whether the destination country is designated as a quarantine management area before traveling abroad, and to observe personal hygiene rules and refrain from contact with suspected infected individuals while staying overseas.

In addition, the county advised residents to immediately consult the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) call center at 1339 or a local public health center if symptoms such as fever, lethargy, rash, vomiting, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding appear within 21 days of entry, which is the maximum incubation period.

Hadong County plans to strengthen preemptive prevention campaigns in light of the recent recurring concerns regarding the influx of infectious diseases from overseas, coinciding with a period of increased overseas travel.
