Coupang Eats Refutes Claims: "Company Fully Bears Free Delivery Costs... Reduces Burden on Businesses and Increases Sales"
Regarding the announcement of an expanded free delivery policy for general members, Coupang Eats refuted claims from some quarters that the policy shifts the cost burden onto business owners, stating, "The company bears all costs and does not pass them on to partner merchants."
In a clarification statement released on the 22nd, Coupang Eats explained, "We have decided to provide the benefit of 'zero delivery fees per order' to Coupang general members on a temporary basis until this coming August," adding, "This measure was established to help revitalize the restaurant industry, which is struggling due to high oil prices and inflation."
They further stated, "The claims by some that delivery food prices will rise in the future are not true."
In particular, they emphasized, "Coupang Eats covers the entire delivery fee that customers would otherwise have to pay. There are absolutely no additional costs incurred by business owners in connection with this promotion."
Furthermore, they explained, "On the contrary, this promotion has reduced the financial burden on business owners. An analysis of actual data showed that the cost per order for Coupang Eats vendors decreased by approximately 5% over the year prior to and following the '0 Won Delivery Fee' promotion."
They added, "As the burden on customers was reduced due to free delivery, the volume of delivery orders increased, leading to sales growth for vendors," noting that "sales per store increased by 98% after the promotion was implemented."
Meanwhile, civic groups have recently continued to criticize delivery platforms' free delivery policies.
Previously, five organizations—the Korea Federation of Small Business, the National Federation of Merchants, the Korea Foodservice Association, the Korea Franchise Association, and the National Cafe Owners Cooperative—issued a joint statement arguing that "Coupang Eats must stop its deceptive measures to expand free delivery." They asserted that "platform companies' marketing costs can eventually be passed on to vendors in the form of brokerage fees or advertising costs. There is a concern that competition for free delivery could lead to platform dependency and a deepening burden on small business owners."
The Delivery Platform Workers' Union under the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) also expressed concern in a statement the previous day, stating that "as competition for free delivery intensifies, the labor intensity and risk burden on riders could increase."
In addition, the Euljiro Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea and the Korea Council of Consumer Organizations have also pointed out that the expansion of free delivery could lead to pressure for increased dining prices and delivery fees in the long term.
