Chungju City Initiates Generational Shift in Glutinous Corn… Introducing New Variety 'Chalok 5' to Boost Farm Income

Chungju City, North Chungcheong Province, has set out to capture the national corn market by leveraging a new glutinous corn variety that dramatically improves taste and cultivation convenience, along with mechanization technology that significantly reduces labor costs.

On the 16th, the Chungju Agricultural Technology Center, in collaboration with the National Institute of Food Science and Technology and the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, held the "Chalok 5 Taste Evaluation and Mechanical Harvesting Demonstration" in Salmi-myeon, Chungju City. This event was organized to promote the excellence of the new variety, developed by the Rural Development Administration to increase food self-sufficiency and expand the stable production base, while also sharing research achievements on the mechanization of edible corn harvesting to address the chronic labor shortage in rural areas.

During the demonstration, the characteristics of the newly developed glutinous corn variety, 'Chalok 5,' were introduced in detail. In particular, the comparative taste evaluation against existing representative cultivated varieties, ‘Mibaek 2’ and ‘Yeonnong 2 (Daehakchal)’, attracted significant interest from the attendees.

‘Chalok 5’ has the advantage of being easy to manage in cultivation, as it grows with an upright structure and produces few side branches. Additionally, its thick, tough husks minimize pest damage, and the kernels are packed tightly to the tips of the ears, resulting in excellent marketability. Farmers participating in the taste evaluation praised the variety, noting its very chewy texture, high sugar content, and large kernels, noting that it possesses sufficient market competitiveness.

Along with this, the self-propelled edible corn harvester unveiled is a complex machine that handles stem cutting, crushing, ear picking, and collection in a single operation. Compared to existing manual harvesting methods, it demonstrated an innovative effect, reducing harvest labor time per 10a from 14.7 hours to just 2 hours—a reduction of more than seven times. The Rural Development Administration has completed the development of the machine and plans to begin pilot distribution to farms starting next year.

Choi Gyu-nam, a farmer who participated in the actual pilot cultivation, expressed satisfaction, stating that he found the crop very easy to manage as it is resistant to lodging and suffers minimal damage from pests and diseases. Kim Ki-young, a manager at the National Institute of Food Science and Technology, also expressed his expectation that the Chungju region will play a leading role in the nationwide distribution of Chalok 5.

Bae Cheol-ho, Director of the Chungju Agricultural Technology Center, stated that this evaluation meeting will serve as an important opportunity to solidify the cultivation foundation for Chalok 5, which is set to grow into a new specialty product of Chungju. He further announced plans to establish a customized distribution strategy that can achieve both increased farm income and consumer satisfaction.

Meanwhile, the Chungju Agricultural Technology Center plans to showcase the volume produced at this year's pilot complex to wholesale markets and consumers to gauge market reaction, and then proceed with full-scale distribution and shipment to local farms starting in 2027.
