Chungju City Produces Over 50 Young Cultural Planners Over 5 Years… Bearing Fruit in Cultural Jobs and Planning Activities
"Culture-Filling Tribe," a core talent development project for Korea's cultural cities promoted by Chungju City and the Chungju Culture & Tourism Foundation's Cultural City Center, is breathing new vitality into Chungju's cultural ecosystem by fostering local youth into independent cultural planners.
"Culture-Filling Tribe" is a community-oriented cultural planner training program designed to support any young person residing in the region to become a key player in culture, even if they are not professional artists. Local youth, who lead their daily lives in diverse fields such as bartenders, workshop operators, Taekkyon practitioners, and small business owners, participated in approximately 100 hours of annual training and workshops to concretize their ideas into projects and gain practical experience in executing them directly in the field.
As a result of implementing the project over the past five years, a total of approximately 50 young cultural planners have been produced. Centered around these individuals, the program has achieved significant results, including the creation of around 80 cultural jobs and ongoing planning activities. Graduates have established themselves as key agents of local culture by planning and operating a variety of cultural events promoted by Chungju City and the private sector, including cultural planning events near the Youth Mall and ‘Cheongchul-Ureuk,’ a youth project for the Uruk Cultural Festival.
In particular, this year, the ‘Munchaebu: Dasibom’ program—an advanced education program linked to graduates—is being strengthened to support the graduates' continued activities. Selected through open recruitment, the graduates undergo team-based practical projects and advanced courses, enabling them to engage in sustainable cultural planning rather than limiting themselves to one-off activities. Through this initiative, Chungju City and the Cultural City Center plan to establish a virtuous cycle where youth and citizens create the culture they desire themselves, fostering spontaneous cultural activities throughout the city.
One young participant in the program shared that through Mun.Chae.Bu, they gained confidence that even ordinary youths living ordinary lives can become agents of local culture. They added that they were able to directly test ideas they had envisioned in the field and expressed a desire to continue cultural endeavors that enrich daily life in Chungju alongside fellow planners. An official from the Cultural City Center also stated that they plan to hold an achievement sharing exhibition this coming October to share the creative ideas of young cultural planners with citizens and create a venue for communication where young people and citizens can build local culture together, and urged young people and citizens to show great interest and participation in leading the cultural changes in Chungju.
