Chungbuk Development Corporation Partners with Korea Occupational Safety Association to Launch Heatwave Prevention Campaign at Construction Sites

The Chungbuk Development Corporation has launched a large-scale preventive campaign to protect the safety and health of construction site workers, many of whom work outdoors, in preparation for rising average summer temperatures and an increase in heatwave advisories. On the morning of the 26th, the Corporation conducted the 2026 Construction Site Heatwave Prevention Campaign in collaboration with the Korea Occupational Safety Association, a specialized industrial safety organization, at the construction site of the Chungcheongbuk-do Welfare Center.

This campaign was organized to create a safe workplace through on-site prevention activities, as the number of workers injured with heat-related illnesses has nearly tripled over the past five years, with about half of these cases occurring in the construction industry. In particular, with heatstroke included as a type of occupational disease under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, proactive safety management has become more important than ever. Approximately 20 people attended the event, including the Corporation's Head of Safety Management and staff, as well as the Chairman and staff of the Chungbuk Branch of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Association. They conducted safety training on heatwave prevention guidelines for about 40 permanent workers at the site and distributed promotional materials.

During the campaign, they intensively promoted the five basic rules for preventing heat-related illnesses through face-to-face interaction. These rules included providing sufficient cool, clean water; installing cooling devices and rest facilities such as portable air conditioners and shade canopies; observing appropriate rest times based on perceived temperature; distributing cooling equipment such as cooling vests; and immediately calling 119 in case of emergencies such as loss of consciousness. They also closely monitored the implementation status of these rules. Furthermore, the Corporation and the Association provided encouraging supplies, such as vitamin drinks, snack sets, and wet wipes, to help maintain the physical function of workers working in the sweltering heat, receiving a positive response from the workers. An official from the Chungbuk Development Corporation stated in an interview that construction site workers, who work in high-temperature environments during the summer, are constantly exposed to the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and heat exhaustion. He emphasized that the corporation will do its utmost to create a safe construction environment where workers can work with peace of mind by conducting regular inspections to ensure the five key safety guidelines are strictly implemented on-site through professional cooperation with the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Association, and by continuing safety and health campaigns in the second half of the year.

Having successfully concluded the on-site campaign, the Chungbuk Development Corporation plans to further expand site-specific support measures for all construction sites within its jurisdiction, including adjusting work schedules during heatwave-vulnerable hours and expanding mobile rest areas. Through these efforts, the corporation intends to establish a systematic safety and health management system to respond to climate change and continuously expand worker-centered, safe workplaces.
