Jeong Seong-hyeon, CEO of Hangul.com, Publishes Children's Debate Fairy Tale *Goyakhae Gyeongyeon School*
Finding the Answer to Communication in King Sejong's 'Gyeongyeon' in an Era of Disconnection
- Kang Soon-ye, Culture Columnist
Jeong Seong-hyeon, CEO of Hangul.com and Director of the Humanities Research Institute at the Sejong Institute of Korean Language and Culture, has published *Goyakhae Gyeongyeon School*, a debate fantasy fairy tale for children.
*Goyakhae Gyeongyeon School* is a fairy tale structured to help children naturally learn the powers of questioning, listening, thinking, and speaking, based on the 'Gyeongyeon' of the King Sejong era. The Gyeongyeon was a gathering where the King and his ministers read books and discussed state affairs together. This book revives that historical scene as a modern-day debate lesson, tailored to a child's perspective.
Today, debates can easily devolve into speaking solely to defeat the opponent. While the speed of speech and the sharpness of logic are emphasized, the attitude of listening to the other person until the end and finding the answer together is often pushed aside. *Goyakhae Gyeongyeon School* brings back the spirit of King Sejong's Gyeongyeon precisely at this point. The book conveys the message that debate is not about defeating someone, but a process of gathering thoughts to find a better path.
The story begins when five fourth-grade friends from Hunmin Elementary School meet "Principal Go Yak-hae." Go Yak-hae is a real historical figure who served as a censor during the reign of King Sejong, speaking frankly to the king. In the book, Go Yak-hae is not merely a playful character. Reflecting on his past of speaking unhesitatingly even before the king, he appears as a guide who teaches the children the true meaning of debate.
Guided by Principal Go Yak-hae, the children travel between the present and the Joseon Dynasty to experience King Sejong's royal lecture hall. The King they encounter there is not a monarch who suppresses his subjects with authority. He is a facilitator who listens to even the most immature speeches, asks questions, and leads them to think more deeply. Through this portrayal of King Sejong, *Go Yak-hae Royal Lecture School* demonstrates that the "power to listen well" is more important than the "power to speak well."
It conveys the message that debate is not about defeating someone, but about gathering thoughts to find a better path. The book features children who are afraid of public speaking, find asking questions difficult, do not know how to speak logically, and possess their own thoughts but struggle to express them. At the Goyakhae Royal Lecture School, these children learn King Sejong's seven methods of debate: creating an open atmosphere, listening attentively, asking good questions, speaking with evidence and examples, calmly conveying the core message, speaking politely, and courageously expressing one's own thoughts.
In particular, this book focuses on the attitude of conversation rather than the skill of showing off eloquence. It easily explains, from a child's perspective, analytical thinking supported by evidence, expressions that respect others, and the courage to express one's own thoughts without being swept away by the crowd. It is a highly useful educational fairy tale for children, especially in educational settings where literacy, presentation skills, questioning skills, and debate abilities have become crucial.
The fact that the book features Goyakhae, a real historical figure and censor, as the narrator is also noteworthy. King Sejong's royal lectures were an open forum for dialogue where free opinions and criticism were exchanged, even within the vertical relationship between the king and his subjects. The author brings this spirit into modern classrooms to help children grow into confident yet polite speakers.
CEO Jung Sung-hyun majored in Creative Writing at Chung-Ang University and studied Speech and Debate at the Graduate School of Communication at Kyung Hee University. He is a reading method expert who has lectured on reading, debate, and writing at schools, public institutions, and corporations for over 30 years. Currently, he serves as the CEO of Hangeul.com and the Director of the Humanities Research Institute at the Sejong Institute for Korean Language and Culture, continuing reading and debate education based on the spirit of King Sejong.
The illustrations were created by cartoonist and illustrator Lee Kyung-seok. He vividly depicts scenes moving between the Joseon Dynasty's royal lecture hall and a modern elementary school, helping young readers immerse themselves in the story.
*Goyakhae Royal Lecture School* is a book that teaches the power of words not to defeat others, but to think together and illuminate the world. It will serve as a warm guide to debate for children who are afraid of public speaking, find asking questions difficult, or struggle to express their own thoughts.
