South Jeolla Province Takes the Lead in ‘Mental Healing’ for Disaster Victims… Strengthening Public-Private Cooperation System

Ahn Sang-hyun, Head of Provincial Safety Office: “Psychological Support is Key to Responding to Large-Scale Disasters Caused by Climate Change”

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province has set out to strengthen its cooperative network to help residents achieve psychological stability and return to daily life as quickly as possible, in response to modern disasters that are becoming larger and more diverse.

South Jeolla Province announced that it held the ‘2026 Disaster Psychological Recovery Support Team Meeting’ at the Disaster Command Center of the Provincial Office on the 24th and intensively discussed measures for more rapid and systematic psychological support.

The South Jeolla Disaster Psychological Recovery Support Team is an expert consultative body operated to prevent trauma among disaster victims and support their return to daily life. It is composed of 12 experts from related institutions, including the Jeonnam Disaster Psychological Recovery Support Center, the Jeonnam Metropolitan Mental Health and Welfare Center, and the Honam Trauma Center.

The Support Team has achieved significant results in the field so far. In fact, a total of 839 psychological counseling sessions were conducted at various disaster sites, including the passenger plane crash in December 2024, the torrential rains last summer, and the recent factory fire in Wando on April 12. Additionally, through six sessions of the "Daily Life Recovery Healing Program," efforts were made to help 104 provincial residents regain psychological stability.

At the meeting, attendees shared the achievements of the past year and finalized activity plans for 2026. In particular, they agreed to further solidify a tight inter-agency cooperation system that begins with initial psychological support within the "golden hour" following a disaster, followed by case management for high-risk groups, in-depth counseling, and referrals for specialist treatment.

Ahn Sang-hyun, Director of the Jeonnam Provincial Resident Safety Office, emphasized, "As the scale and types of disasters have grown larger recently due to climate change and other factors, caring for the victims' mental well-being has become just as important as recovering from physical damage." He added, "We will expand customized psychological support services so that residents can overcome the shock of disasters and return to their peaceful daily lives as soon as possible." Jeonnam Province plans to activate a regional cooperation network by utilizing the Jeonnam Disaster Psychological Recovery Support Center, along with the Western Service Center in Mokpo and the Eastern Service Center in Suncheon, as hubs. Through this, the province plans to distribute specialized counseling manuals tailored to different types of disasters and continuously promote psychological welfare services that residents can experience firsthand.
