South Jeolla Province Goes ‘All-Out’ to Prevent Apple Snail Damage… ‘Intensive Management Week’ Operated Until the 21st

Focus on Pre-monitoring, Pesticide Spraying, and Collection from Irrigation Canals Targeting 10 High-risk Cities and Counties - Administration, Farmers, and Organizations Join Hands as ‘Field Messengers’ to Minimize Damage from Overwintering Adults - Preemptive Responses, Including Drying Paddy Fields and Deep Plowing, Covered 16,000 Hectares Since Last Winter

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province is launching large-scale prevention and collection activities to prevent damage to rice farms caused by apple snails.

The province announced that it has designated the period until the 21st as the ‘Intensive Management Week for Apple Snail Damage Prevention’ and will aggressively implement pre-monitoring, preventive pesticide spraying, and intensive collection from irrigation canals, focusing on 10 cities and counties designated as high-risk areas.

Damage caused by apple snails occurs when overwintering adult snails, having survived the winter, gnaw on young rice seedlings after transplanting. While apple snails are useful for eco-friendly agriculture, failure to collect them in a timely manner can cause significant damage to farms. Therefore, proactive measures are paramount to preserve their utility while preventing their leakage into the natural ecosystem and blocking their entry into rice paddies.

To this end, Jeollanam-do Province has joined hands with administrative agencies, farmers, and producer organizations. Before introducing apple snails into rice paddies in earnest, they are conducting intensive collection activities centered around irrigation canals.

Following the completion of a survey on the overwintering status of apple snails in the Usim area, the Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services) is operating a "Field Monitoring Team" on a continuous basis during the intensive management period. Each city, county, and agricultural technology center has established a management system to share real-time updates and stock preventative materials in advance to enable immediate response in the event of damage.

Field-oriented public-private cooperation is also noteworthy. The "Apple Snail Management Field Messengers," composed of representatives from eco-friendly complexes and village heads, are constantly monitoring local outbreak trends and sharing them in group chat rooms. These individuals are playing a vital role as guardians, immediately receiving pest control agents and taking on-site measures whenever there is a concern about potential damage.

Jeonnam Province has been continuing these efforts since last winter. From December of last year to the end of February this year, the province operated a "rice paddy drying" and "deep plowing intensive period" utilizing the off-season, targeting vulnerable municipalities such as Haenam and Jindo.

Through the cultivation of winter crops and the practice of deep plowing, the province has been striving to reduce the population of apple snails by proactively implementing overwintering prevention measures across a total area of 16,000 hectares.
