South Jeolla Province Rolls Up Rolls-Up for Human Rights Protection of Salt Farm Workers… Launches Fact-Finding Survey

Initiative briefing held on the 29th… Interviews and in-depth interviews to be conducted until November - Focusing on detailed, on-site assessment of employment paths, wages, and working conditions

(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province is embarking on a full-scale fact-finding survey to prevent human rights violations against salt farm workers and improve their poor working conditions.

South Jeolla Province announced that it held an initiation briefing for the "Survey on Working Conditions of Salt Farm Workers" at the Kim Yeon-su Room of the Provincial Office on the 29th. Approximately 20 officials attended the briefing, including representatives from relevant departments of South Jeolla Province and cities/counties, as well as officials from related organizations such as the Mokpo Branch of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the South Jeolla Provincial Police Agency, the South Jeolla Human Rights Commission, and the Jeonnam Research Institute, to discuss the direction of an effective survey.

This fact-finding survey is being conducted to prevent the recurrence of human rights violations at salt farm sites and to establish an institutional foundation for improving the treatment of workers. The Jeonnam Research Institute, which is in charge of the survey, plans to conduct direct interviews and in-depth interviews with salt farm workers and employers in the province by this coming November.

Key survey items include employment pathways, living and working environments, wage payment practices, human rights violations, and health status. In particular, the province has refined the survey items and schedule by actively incorporating areas for improvement identified in last year's survey, and plans to focus on enhancing the reliability of the results while minimizing the burden on production sites.

Son Young-gon, Head of the Fisheries Distribution and Processing Division at Jeonnam Province, emphasized, "Analyzing the root causes and establishing field-oriented policies are paramount for preventing human rights violations," adding, "Through this survey, we will devise practical measures to ensure that salt farm workers can work in a safe and respectful environment."

Meanwhile, based on the results of this survey, Jeonnam Province plans to supplement policies for the protection of salt farm workers' human rights and establish a mid-to-long-term roadmap for improving working conditions.
