South Jeolla Province Hits Big Hit in ‘Senior Sports Class’ Open Call… Secures 990 Million Won in State Funding
Ranked 3rd Nationwide, 10 Cities & Counties Finally Selected… Secures Stable Budget for 3 Years - Expansion of Customized Sports Including Traditional Archery and Park Golf… Systematic Management Linked with ‘National Physical Fitness Certification Centers’
(Muan = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = South Jeolla Province achieved a remarkable feat by securing 990 million won in state funding (National Sports Promotion Fund) by achieving top-tier results nationwide in the open call for the ‘2026 Senior Sports Class Program Support Project’ organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
The open call was conducted in three phases, starting with the first phase last December and continuing through May of this year. South Jeolla Province demonstrated its strength by having a total of 10 cities and counties selected, ranking third among the 17 provinces and cities nationwide, following Busan and Gangwon. The selected local governments by round are: 1st Round: Gwangyang-si, Yeongam-gun, Gangjin-gun, Boseong-gun, and Jindo-gun; 2nd Round: Hampyeong-gun, Gangjin-gun, and Sinan-gun; and 3rd Round: Yeongam-gun and Jangseong-gun. These cities and counties will receive state funding for the next three years, enabling them to secure a stable budget of at least 300 million won per local government to carry out the projects.
The "Senior Sports Class Program Support Project" is an initiative that operates customized sports classes for seniors aged 65 and older, reflecting local characteristics and demand. Beyond simple physical activity, the project aims to promote the health of seniors, expand social participation, and revitalize community interaction.
Each city and county plans to expand the operation of low-intensity, low-risk recreational sports disciplines, taking into account the physical characteristics and life cycles of seniors. Key programs include traditional archery and dance sports classes in Gwangyang City; gymnastics, table tennis, bowling, and gateball classes and exchange matches in Yeongam County; aqua aerobics and park golf in Hampyeong County; and intergenerational integration programs centered on soccer and badminton in Gangjin County.
In particular, Jeonnam Province is introducing a "scientific follow-up management system" to enhance the effectiveness of this project. The plan is to measure the basic physical fitness of participating seniors through provincial National Physical Fitness Certification Centers before the program begins, and to conduct re-measurements at the end of the annual program to visualize and manage improvements in fitness data. Additionally, for sports that allow for team competition, periodic exchange matches will be held to foster a sense of accomplishment and belonging.
Choi Young-ju, Director General of the Tourism and Sports Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, "I hope that through this sports program support project, seniors will naturally take care of their health in their daily lives and regain vitality. Moving forward, we will create an environment where all residents can enjoy recreational sports close to home to realize a healthy Jeonnam and a happy old age."
