South Jeolla Province Announces Preliminary Designation of 3 Cultural Heritage Sites, Including Wontongjeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple, as ‘Treasures’... Historical Value Recognized
Including UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Wontongjeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple, Eungjindang Hall at Songgwangsa Temple, and Buddhist Paintings at Heungguksa Temple... Expected to Strengthen Foundation for Preservation and Utilization of Local Cultural Heritage
(Muan·Suncheon = Break News) Reporter Lee Hak-su = Three precious cultural heritage sites in South Jeolla Province are expected to be elevated to the status of ‘Treasures,’ designated national cultural heritage.
South Jeolla Province announced that the National Heritage Administration has issued a preliminary designation notice for Wontongjeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon, Eungjindang Hall at Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon, and the paintings of Jeseokcheon and Cheonryong at Heungguksa Temple in Yeosu as National Cultural Heritage Treasures. This preliminary notice is interpreted as the result of external recognition of the unrivaled historical and artistic value possessed by temple architecture and Buddhist paintings in the South Jeolla region.
First, Wontongjeon Hall at Seonamsa Temple in Suncheon, which has been announced as a Treasure, is one of the core architectural structures of ‘Mountain Monasteries, Korean Mountain Monasteries,’ which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2018. Rebuilt in 1824 with the patronage of the Joseon royal family, this site is a "Royal Wondang" where a legend tells of King Sunjo being born after King Jeongjo prayed. It holds significant historical symbolism, particularly due to the preservation of the "Daebokjeon" (Hall of Great Fortune) plaque, believed to have been written by King Sunjo during his childhood. Furthermore, it displays architectural aesthetics reflecting the characteristics of the Honam region, such as its unique "T-shaped" floor plan and an open form with three sides open.
Eungjindang Hall at Songgwangsa Temple in Suncheon, which retains the dignity of a *Sangbo* (Temple of the Buddha's Treasures), is an architectural structure that has maintained its original form well to this day since its renovation in 1623. Inside, numerous treasure-class cultural heritage items are enshrined, including a wooden statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha Triad and clay statues of the Sixteen Arhats. It holds high academic value as it embodies the traditional architectural techniques of the mid-Joseon period within its neat scale, which features three bays each on the front and sides.
In the field of Buddhist painting, the *Jeokseokcheon* and *Cheonryongdo* paintings from Heungguksa Temple in Yeosu have been recognized. Produced in 1741 under the leadership of the head monk Geungcheok, this Buddhist painting depicts deities who protect the Dharma. It is a rare example where the painting of Indra and the painting of the Heavenly Dragon were created as separate panels to form a pair; the contrast between the static and dynamic compositions makes it a valuable document that clearly illustrates the religious system of the late Joseon Dynasty.
Taking this preliminary designation as a national treasure as an opportunity, Jeollanam-do Province plans to further strengthen systematic preservation, management, and utilization measures for local cultural heritage.
An official from Jeollanam-do Province stated, "We will continue to investigate and research outstanding cultural heritage within the province to expand the designation of national cultural heritage," adding, "We will do our utmost to ensure that our precious cultural heritage enhances regional cultural pride and is widely utilized as a tourism resource."
